Innovative Tokyo house blends privacy, openness, and Japanese tradition

Urban Prism, located in Tachikawa, Tokyo, stands as a testament to the potential of contemporary architecture to elevate urban living. Designed by Nobuaki Miyashita, this three-story house reimagines the constraints of city zoning as creative catalysts, resulting in a residence that harmonizes privacy, natural light, and spatial fluidity. The project’s sculptural form and layered volumes draw inspiration from traditional Japanese design, reinterpreted through a modern lens to meet the demands of today’s urban environments.

A defining feature of Urban Prism is its dynamic interplay between openness and enclosure. Carefully arranged boundary walls and a secure gate establish a buffer zone, inviting natural light and air while shielding the interior from the bustling city. The courtyard, seamlessly extending the living space outdoors, and adjustable screens allow residents to modulate privacy and daylight according to their needs. Black bamboo and upward lighting at the entrance evoke a serene Japanese aesthetic, setting the tone for the tranquil atmosphere within.

Material selection plays a crucial role in the home’s identity and longevity. The exterior is clad in textured fiber cement siding, which accentuates the shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the day. Inside, a harmonious blend of solid wood, steel, and glass creates a warm yet contemporary environment. Oak flooring enhances the tactile experience, while high-performance insulated glass and movable screens optimize ventilation, daylight, and privacy. These choices ensure durability and minimal maintenance, essential for urban dwellings.

Urban Prism’s design was shaped by rigorous architectural research and advanced simulation techniques. Model testing, on-site analysis, and material performance tests informed every decision, from volumetric manipulation to optimize space within strict height and setback regulations, to the integration of daylight and airflow simulations for comfort.
