Art Deco Revival: The Upper East Suite Transformation

Historic elegance meets modern comfort in a New York landmark

Guoqiang Feng and Yan Chen breathe new life into a pre-war Upper East Side apartment, blending 1930s Art Deco charm with contemporary sophistication for a refined urban retreat.

Located in Manhattan’s Upper East Side Historic District, The Upper East Suite stands as a testament to the enduring allure of New York’s architectural heritage. Originally built in 1924 as an apartment hotel, the building’s French-inspired name and storied past set the stage for a remarkable renovation. Designers Guoqiang Feng and Yan Chen drew inspiration from the apartment’s rich history and the owners’ curated collection of 1930s Art Deco lighting and furniture sourced from New York, Paris, and Shanghai. Their vision was to harmonize period aesthetics with the demands of modern living, resulting in a residence that is both functional and exquisitely refined.

The transformation of this suite required a delicate balance between preservation and innovation. The design team conducted extensive research into iconic Art Deco interiors, referencing landmarks such as The Carlyle, The Mark, and 740 Park Avenue. This historical context informed every detail, from the custom millwork to the selection of materials. Full-height woodwork, seamless storage solutions, and precisely integrated glass mirrors were prefabricated for accuracy and assembled on site, ensuring both craftsmanship and authenticity.

Spatial flexibility was a core principle guiding the renovation. Textured glass sliding doors were introduced to the kitchen and bedroom, while wooden sliding partitions define the study. These features allow the interior to shift effortlessly between open, interactive spaces and private, intimate zones. Mirrored surfaces strategically amplify natural light and create a sense of expansiveness, counterbalancing the apartment’s original constraints as a former hotel suite.

One of the project’s most significant challenges was respecting the building’s protected status while adapting it for contemporary urban life. The fixed layout and historic elements demanded innovative solutions to maximize functionality. Custom cabinetry, concealed storage, and a thoughtfully designed study exemplify how the design team navigated these limitations, achieving a seamless blend of heritage and modernity without compromising the integrity of the original architecture.

The Upper East Suite has been recognized for its ingenuity, earning a Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025. This accolade highlights the project’s success in integrating best practices in art, science, and design, and its contribution to enhancing quality of life. The suite now stands as a timeless haven, inviting residents and guests to experience the quiet luxury and historical resonance of New York’s Upper East Side.

With its meticulous attention to detail and respect for the past, The Upper East Suite exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform historic spaces into contemporary sanctuaries. This project not only preserves the legacy of a bygone era but also sets a new standard for urban residential living.
