“Eternal” stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in residential architecture. By leveraging the natural elevation difference of its site, the house achieves a rare harmony with its surroundings. The structure’s volumes are strategically placed both above and below ground, allowing the building to merge effortlessly with the terrain. This approach not only enhances the home’s stability but also creates a dynamic spatial composition that distinguishes it from conventional residential designs.
One of the home’s most striking features is its floating exterior, which appears to hover above the landscape. Large south-facing openings invite abundant natural light while offering residents sweeping views and a sense of seclusion from the street below. The basement level serves as a garage and hobby room, while the main living spaces are elevated, maximizing both privacy and the panoramic outlook. This spatial arrangement transforms the site’s limitations into opportunities for comfort and connection with nature.
Structural innovation underpins the success of “Eternal.” The design employs large-section laminated timber and robust metal joints, ensuring both strength and safety in a region known for seismic activity. In Japan, where wooden structures are common yet must meet rigorous earthquake standards, meticulous structural analysis was essential. The wooden rigid frame structure not only supports expansive openings but also aligns with low-carbon construction goals, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.
Research for the project focused on achieving a balance between safety, comfort, and environmental integration. Surveys and tours informed the design, emphasizing the psychological benefits of organic architecture that fosters a sense of unity with the natural world. The result is a home that feels both open and secure, offering residents an “eternal” experience of tranquility and inspiration.
“Eternal” has garnered significant recognition, earning the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 for its exceptional creativity and technical excellence. Michihiro Matsuo’s vision showcases how innovative architecture can elevate daily living, turning constraints into catalysts for beauty and well-being.
This project exemplifies the potential of contemporary residential design to harmonize with challenging sites, prioritize sustainability, and deliver an elevated lifestyle experience—both literally and figuratively.
