Kabuki-Inspired Visuals Elevate Sawamura Award 2024

Takuma Tahara’s design blends tradition and innovation for new employee celebration

Takuma Tahara’s key visual for the Sawamura Award 2024 transforms the event’s identity by merging traditional Japanese kabuki motifs with contemporary graphic design, setting a vibrant tone for a new generation at SAWAMURA Inc.

The Sawamura Award 2024, held at Kyoto’s historic Minamiza theater, introduced a striking key visual by designer Takuma Tahara. Drawing inspiration from the event’s theme, “KABUKU”—a term that embodies both playful behavior and the dramatic flair of kabuki theater—the design reimagines the alphabet as both typography and illustration. Each letter of “KABUKU” is crafted to double as a visual motif, referencing the ornate aesthetics of kabuki and the iconic Minamiza venue.

Central to the design’s uniqueness is its seamless integration with the event’s setting. The key visual not only reflects the grandeur of kabuki but also aligns with the sub-concept of “tradition and innovation.” Traditional Japanese color schemes are combined with modern elements, creating a visual language that resonates with both heritage and forward-thinking spirit. This approach ensures that the design communicates the event’s core message to new employees, fostering a deeper connection to company values.

Displayed across multiple platforms—including the client’s office, event venue, award certificates, social media, press releases, and invitations—the visual identity established a cohesive and motivating atmosphere. Invitations were styled to resemble stage tickets, further immersing participants in the theatrical experience. The consistent use of motifs and colors heightened anticipation and excitement among attendees, reinforcing the event’s celebratory nature.

The realization of this design relied on Adobe Illustrator CC, with meticulous attention to detail in color selection and pattern integration. Takuma Tahara’s research involved studying kabuki theater architecture, traditional Japanese patterns, and color palettes, ensuring authenticity and innovation coexisted harmoniously. The challenge of balancing a diverse color scheme—necessitated by the need for individualized winner visuals—was met through extensive testing and refinement.

This award-winning design, recognized with a Silver A’ Design Award in 2025, exemplifies how visual communication can bridge cultural heritage and modernity. By capturing the spirit of kabuki and the aspirations of SAWAMURA Inc., the key visual not only announced an event but also inspired a sense of unity and pride among its participants.

Takuma Tahara’s work for the Sawamura Award 2024 stands as a testament to the power of design in shaping memorable experiences, blending artistry, tradition, and innovation for a new generation of talent.
