Terraglide: Redefining Urban Mobility with Joystick Precision

Recumbent electric tricycle merges innovation, comfort, and eco-friendly design

Terraglide, designed by Alex Gudilko and team, introduces a new era of personal transportation by blending advanced joystick-controlled technology with ergonomic comfort and sustainable mobility.

Terraglide stands out as a recumbent electric tricycle that leverages steer-by-wire joystick control, a feature inspired by aerospace and automotive advancements. This innovation allows for fluid, responsive steering, making urban navigation and open-road exploration equally effortless. Unlike traditional tricycles that rely on mechanical steering, Terraglide’s electronic system ensures precision and adaptability, catering to a diverse range of riders and environments.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Terraglide is its combination of pedal-assist generator and fully electric propulsion. Riders can choose to exercise by pedaling, which not only provides a customizable workout but also recharges the battery, or simply enjoy a smooth ride powered by a robust 900 Wh battery. This dual-mode approach supports up to 100 miles (160 km) of range, making it suitable for both daily commutes and recreational journeys while maintaining zero emissions.

The tricycle’s frame is crafted from lightweight, high-strength aluminum, ensuring durability without compromising on aesthetics. Advanced suspension and ergonomic seating guarantee comfort on long rides, while integrated storage compartments add practicality for everyday use. The design process involved 3D modeling, CNC machining, and rigorous real-world testing to refine stability, ride dynamics, and user experience.

Research for Terraglide focused on human-machine interaction, ergonomics, and adaptive mechanics. Iterative prototyping and testing, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA), confirmed the tricycle’s improved maneuverability and energy efficiency. The result is a disruptive innovation in personal mobility, addressing balance challenges and enabling accessible, dual-mode riding for a broad audience.

Terraglide’s journey from concept to realization began in Los Angeles in 2023, culminating in its exhibition at the Abundance 360 summit. The project overcame significant challenges, particularly in harmonizing accessibility, exercise functionality, and seamless energy integration. Its recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025 highlights its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements.
