Splash App Revolutionizes Campus Social Connections

Junjie Xu’s instant networking platform fosters effortless, real-world friendships

Inspired by the need for spontaneous, low-barrier socializing among college students, Splash offers a seamless solution for building genuine connections on campus.

College life is often marked by the challenge of forming new friendships, especially in an era dominated by digital interactions. Recognizing this gap, Junjie Xu developed Splash, a social app designed to make meeting new friends on campus as easy as a single tap. Drawing inspiration from the instant matching model popularized by platforms like Uber, Splash eliminates the time and financial hurdles that often deter students from engaging in real-life social activities.

Splash distinguishes itself through its instant offline networking capabilities. The app leverages real-time event creation, smart notifications, and second-degree connections to build trust and foster meaningful interactions. Unlike traditional social platforms, Splash prioritizes speed, spontaneity, and safety, ensuring that users can connect with others based on shared availability, location, and interests. This approach is supported by robust privacy features, including end-to-end encryption and phone number-based authentication, creating a secure environment for users.

The development of Splash was rooted in extensive research, including a 500-person survey at Carnegie Mellon University and over 100 user interviews. These insights revealed a strong demand for a frictionless, free social meetup app that prioritizes low effort and real-time availability. The design team adopted Lean UX principles and rapid prototyping, using tools like Figma for UI design and technologies such as Swift, React Native, and Firebase for scalable, real-time event processing. This iterative process ensured that the app remained intuitive and responsive to user needs.

Functionality is at the heart of Splash’s appeal. Users can sign up with their phone number, sync contacts, and discover upcoming campus events. Event creation is streamlined, requiring minimal input, while AI-powered notifications and smart reminders boost engagement and attendance. By leveraging second-degree connections, Splash enhances social proof and trust, reducing drop-off rates and making real-world meetups more accessible and enjoyable.

Splash’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. The app was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its practical, user-centric design and its contribution to improving campus life. By removing barriers to socializing and prioritizing user safety, Splash is setting a new standard for how technology can enrich real-world relationships among students.

As campuses continue to seek ways to foster community and well-being, Splash stands out as a model for how thoughtful design and technology can bridge the gap between digital convenience and authentic human connection.
