Thai Weaving Inspires Award-Winning Bk Salon Restaurant

Phaithaya Banchakitikun reimagines fine dining with traditional Thai artistry

Bk Salon, designed by Phaithaya Banchakitikun, seamlessly blends Thai cultural heritage with contemporary architecture, earning the prestigious Golden A' Design Award for its innovative approach to restaurant design.

Located on Sathupradit Road in Bangkok, Bk Salon stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of Thai craftsmanship. The restaurant’s architecture draws direct inspiration from iconic Thai woven products, including the “Kratip” sticky rice container and round bamboo baskets. This influence is most evident in the building’s facade, which features artificial rattan strands woven into intricate patterns, creating a visually striking three-dimensional effect that both celebrates tradition and invites modern interpretation.

The layout of Bk Salon is designed as a cluster of buildings, each with varying heights and facades, forming an open courtyard at the center. This space serves as an inviting outdoor seating area shaded by trees, offering guests a tranquil dining experience that harmonizes with nature. The interplay of transparency and opacity, achieved through the overlapping woven facades, allows natural light to filter through while maintaining a sense of privacy and intimacy.

Inside, the design continues to impress with fully curved glass panels that stretch from floor to ceiling, enhancing the sense of openness and fluidity. The restaurant offers a variety of dining experiences, including a café at the entrance, a main restaurant area, and a private dining space on the second floor adaptable for exclusive Chef’s Table events. Each area is thoughtfully positioned to maximize comfort and accessibility, with the service zone discreetly integrated to maintain the visual harmony of the facade.

The realization of Bk Salon’s design required extensive research into building proportions and weaving techniques. The design team meticulously selected patterns and tested interlocking methods to ensure the facade’s feasibility with real materials. Attention to detail extended to every aspect of the project, from walkway surfaces and railings to landscape integration, ensuring that each element supported the overarching concept of woven unity.

Bk Salon’s innovative fusion of vernacular Thai materials and contemporary form has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, the project was awarded the Golden A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design, a recognition reserved for creations that significantly advance art, science, and design. This accolade underscores the restaurant’s role as a trendsetting example of how cultural heritage can be reimagined for modern lifestyles.

Bk Salon exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate dining into an immersive cultural experience, setting a new standard for architectural excellence in the hospitality industry.
