Outside In: Reviving the Courtyard for Modern Urban Living

Central glass cube and greenery redefine compact home design

Seyedjalil Mousavi’s Outside In house project reimagines the classic Iranian courtyard, transforming it into a vibrant, year-round living space that harmoniously blends indoor and outdoor environments. This innovative approach addresses the challenges of urban density while honoring cultural heritage and modern lifestyles.

Outside In stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of traditional architectural concepts, adapted for contemporary urban contexts. Drawing inspiration from the historic courtyards of Hamedan, Iran, the design centers on a striking glass cube enveloped by lush greenery. This feature not only maximizes natural light and ventilation but also creates a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces, fostering a sense of openness and tranquility within a compact urban footprint.

The house occupies a 230-square-meter plot, with 70 percent dedicated to the building’s volume and the remainder forming a yard that extends both vertically and horizontally. The duplex layout connects multiple floors through the central courtyard, enhancing spatial flow and interaction. This vertical and horizontal integration allows the courtyard to function as the heart of the home, supporting a dynamic, multi-functional lifestyle while maintaining a strong connection to nature and the sky.

Material selection plays a pivotal role in balancing tradition and innovation. The facade is clad in Abbas Abad Stone, a nod to regional heritage, while marble flooring and natural wood doors introduce warmth and elegance. Thermal break windows contribute to energy efficiency, ensuring the home remains comfortable throughout the year. These choices reflect a commitment to sustainability, durability, and aesthetic harmony.

The project’s realization required overcoming significant creative and technical challenges. Urban constraints and limited land availability demanded inventive solutions to maximize usable space without sacrificing comfort or beauty. By revitalizing the courtyard as a central, functional element, the design achieves improved livability, energy efficiency, and a unique architectural identity that distinguishes it from conventional urban homes.

Outside In’s success is underscored by its recognition at the 2025 A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award, where it received the Bronze distinction for its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design can bridge tradition and modernity, offering a blueprint for sustainable, culturally resonant urban living.

As urban environments continue to evolve, projects like Outside In highlight the potential of architectural innovation to enrich daily life, fostering deeper connections between people, nature, and heritage. This approach not only addresses practical challenges but also inspires a renewed appreciation for the timeless principles of good design.
