Fine Interlock: A Modern Chandelier Inspired by DNA

Che Chia Hsu reimagines traditional tenon joints with cutting-edge technology

Fine Interlock, a chandelier by Che Chia Hsu, merges the precision of traditional woodworking with innovative CNC processing, resulting in a luminous piece that draws inspiration from both ancient craft and the helical structure of DNA.

Che Chia Hsu’s Fine Interlock chandelier stands as a testament to the evolving dialogue between heritage craftsmanship and modern technology. Drawing from the meticulous calculation and precision inherent in traditional Chinese tenon joints, the design explores new possibilities by leveraging advanced CNC processing. The result is a chandelier that not only honors the past but also pushes the boundaries of form and function in contemporary lighting design.

The inspiration behind Fine Interlock stems from the designer’s fascination with the dovetail joint’s geometry and its visual resemblance to the twisting double helix of DNA. This conceptual link is brought to life through experimental modeling, where the interplay of structure and light becomes a central theme. The chandelier’s unique feature is its ability to channel light exclusively through the tenon joints, highlighting the craftsmanship and the core concept of the piece.

Fine Interlock distinguishes itself through its innovative use of materials and production methods. Aluminum, chosen for its strength and malleability, is finished with polished chrome plating to achieve a striking mirror effect. The integration of SLA 3D printing allows for the creation of transparent resin components with complex shapes, which are then matte-finished to enhance their light-guiding properties. This blend of traditional and digital fabrication techniques redefines what is possible in chandelier design.

The design process involved extensive research into traditional woodworking, including hands-on learning from a woodcraft master and iterative prototyping with 3D printing. Collaboration with an ironworker further refined the application of metal in the final product. Overcoming challenges such as material weight and the quest for originality, Che Chia Hsu reengineered the structure to ensure both visual impact and practical feasibility.

Measuring 840mm by 100mm by 20mm, Fine Interlock is both authentic and breathtaking, embodying delicacy and precision. The project, completed in Taiwan between August 2024 and January 2025, has garnered recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in 2025 for its innovative integration of industry best practices and technical excellence. This chandelier not only illuminates spaces but also celebrates the fusion of tradition and innovation in contemporary design.

Fine Interlock invites viewers to appreciate the beauty of craftsmanship reimagined for the modern era, encouraging a renewed appreciation for the intersection of art, technology, and cultural heritage in everyday living.
