Located in Danzhou City, Hainan, House 4021 stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of architecture and nature. Inspired by the desire to create a vacation experience that feels organic to its coastal setting, the design employs staggered terraced massing. This approach not only reduces the visual impact of the building along the shoreline but also evokes the image of a structure growing naturally from the land, much like indigenous flora.
The project’s minimalist philosophy is evident in its use of natural materials and open spaces, fostering a seamless connection between the built environment and its surroundings. The rooftop features an ecological garden and an infinity pool, both enhanced by native plants, offering guests a tranquil retreat with panoramic views of the sea and mountains. The building’s form, characterized by simple block stacking and gentle curves, mirrors the undulating waves and rolling terrain, reinforcing its connection to the landscape.
Technological innovation is central to House 4021’s realization. The facade is clad in aluminum panels with patterns that mimic the textures of waves and sand, allowing the structure to blend effortlessly with its coastal environment. These panels, specially treated for weather resistance, create dynamic visual effects as sunlight shifts throughout the day, while ensuring longevity against the harsh seaside climate.
Functionality is thoughtfully addressed through the design’s spatial organization. A dedicated elevator provides direct access to the rooftop pool and recreation area, maintaining privacy for guest accommodations. The fourth floor’s closed garden, featuring hanging plants, acts as an ecological barrier, enhancing sustainability and comfort. Parametric design techniques were employed to optimize the terraced setbacks, providing effective passive shading and maximizing views from every guest room.
House 4021’s commitment to environmental harmony extends to its landscaping, with locally adapted vegetation forming a cohesive green zone around the building. This not only enhances the visual integration with the natural setting but also contributes to the building’s thermal performance. The project’s innovative approach and technical excellence were recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in 2025, underscoring its role as a model for sustainable, modern resort architecture.
House 4021 exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate the vacation experience while respecting and enhancing the natural environment. Its blend of architectural innovation, ecological sensitivity, and modern luxury sets a new standard for coastal living.
