Seashell-inspired cruise terminal redefines the coastal landscape of Dongtou

Located at Tantou Mountain Bay in Dongtou District, the Dongtou Passenger Port exemplifies the fusion of art, architecture, and environmental harmony. Drawing inspiration from the curvilinear forms of seashells and the spiritual essence of Buddhist grottoes, the terminal evokes the concept of a "Maritime Mirage of Sacred Caves." Its shell-like structure, reminiscent of a colossal shell cradling a pearl, creates a mirage-like seascape that captures both the imagination and the cultural heritage of the region.

The terminal’s design is guided by the principle of "Symbiosis of Mountain and Sea," seamlessly integrating terraced setback buildings and vegetated slopes into the natural landscape. This approach not only connects urban and scenic zones but also establishes a three-dimensional space that links mountains to coastline. The project features an 800-meter commercial-waterfront belt and vertically zones transport, commercial, and ecological corridors, resulting in a low-carbon, symbiotic entity that promotes sustainable urban development.

Technologically, the terminal employs a curved concrete shell structure, allowing for expansive, column-free interior spaces. This engineering solution enhances the building’s functionality as a bustling passenger port while maintaining an open, airy atmosphere for travelers and visitors. The innovative use of materials and form ensures structural integrity and visual impact, setting a new standard for cruise terminal design.

Spanning a site area of 21,000 square meters with a total floor area of 10,500 square meters, the Dongtou Passenger Port is meticulously planned to balance functional requirements with aesthetic aspirations. The design addresses the challenge of integrating architecture into complex terrain, providing inviting leisure spaces and scenic walking routes that encourage public engagement with the waterfront.
