Chido: A Playful Vest Redefining Kids’ Swim Organization

Modular storage and interactive design foster independence in young swimmers

Inspired by the everyday challenges parents face, Yan Hau Chen - First Rank introduces Chido, a multifunctional vest that transforms the way children organize their swim essentials, blending playful learning with practical innovation.

Chido stands out as a wearable storage solution designed specifically for children aged 3 to 8. The vest addresses a common parental concern: keeping swim gear organized while nurturing a child’s sense of responsibility. Drawing on research in child development, the design integrates interactive elements that make tidying up enjoyable, encouraging children to take charge of their belongings. This approach not only streamlines outings but also supports the development of positive habits from an early age.

The vest’s unique features include adjustable sizing to accommodate growth and detachable storage pouches for flexible organization. Each pouch is thoughtfully dimensioned to fit swim goggles, small toys, and other essentials, ensuring that children can easily access and manage their items. The use of lightweight, water-resistant materials guarantees comfort and durability, while customizable decorations allow kids to personalize their vest, turning routine organization into a creative activity.

Advanced production techniques underpin Chido’s durability and functionality. High-density EVA foam padding provides buoyancy without sacrificing flexibility, and reinforced Velcro and snap fasteners secure the modular pouches. Heat-sealed stitching prevents water absorption, extending the vest’s lifespan, while injection-molded silicone and anti-fog polycarbonate ensure the accompanying goggles offer a clear, leak-proof fit. These technical details reflect a commitment to safety and ease of use, vital for young users.

Chido’s development process was rooted in user-centered research. Observational studies and interviews with parents highlighted the need for a solution that balances organization, comfort, and engagement. Prototype testing with children informed the vest’s adjustable system and interactive features, ensuring the final product is both intuitive and enjoyable. The design team’s iterative approach overcame challenges in material selection and modularity, resulting in a vest that grows with the child and adapts to various needs.

Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, Chido exemplifies how thoughtful design can enhance daily routines and foster independence in children. By merging practical storage with playful customization, the vest not only eases the parental load but also empowers young users to develop lifelong organizational skills. Scheduled for production in July 2025, Chido is set to make a splash at international design and children’s product fairs, signaling a new era in functional, educational accessories for kids.

Chido’s innovative approach to wearable storage reimagines the intersection of design, child development, and everyday convenience. As families seek smarter solutions for active lifestyles, this award-winning vest offers a compelling blend of function, comfort, and fun—making every swim outing a lesson in independence.
