Shanghai Cloud: Revitalizing Industrial Heritage with Digital Intelligence

FTA Group transforms an old factory into a smart city innovation hub

Shanghai Cloud by FTA Group reimagines industrial heritage, blending modern architecture with digital intelligence to foster creativity and community in North Shanghai.

Shanghai Cloud stands as a testament to the power of adaptive reuse, transforming the former Pengpu Machine Factory into a cutting-edge digital intelligence center. Drawing inspiration from the motif of the "superimposed cube," FTA Group’s design breaks down the monolithic factory structure into harmonious, interconnected blocks. This approach avoids urban isolation, instead creating vertical communities with three-dimensional networks that encourage spontaneous interaction and collaboration.

Located in the North Shanghai Hi-Tech Park, the project marks a pivotal shift from industrialization to intelligence. The site’s new identity is anchored by three towers, the tallest reaching 130 meters, and a total floor area of 270,000 square meters. The two western towers are linked by a striking aerial corridor at a height of 100 meters, spanning 63 meters to foster connectivity and visual dynamism. The design’s dislocated and overlapping forms generate terraces, sky gardens, and outdoor courtyards, cultivating a warm, inviting atmosphere that supports creativity around the clock.

FTA Group’s realization strategy carefully balances preservation and innovation. The original factory’s red brick façade and structural elements have been meticulously restored, while new interventions—such as metal and glass roofs—introduce a contemporary edge. High-rise buildings are strategically placed along the site’s boundary to minimize traffic impact and create a cohesive urban interface. Inside, human-scaled streets and communal spaces nurture a vibrant science and technology community, seamlessly integrating the old and the new.

Functionality is at the heart of Shanghai Cloud’s design. Flexible office spaces cater to enterprises of all sizes, from startups to established corporations, while state-of-the-art laboratories support high-tech research and development. The complex also accommodates multifunctional needs, including conference, exhibition, and brand promotion spaces, making it a versatile hub for innovation. The plant renovation alone covers 16,000 square meters, with expansive facades and long-span steel-concrete structures offering limitless possibilities for interior layouts.

Research and global best practices informed every stage of the project. FTA Group recognized that the degree of intelligence embedded in the park would define its role in the future industrial ecosystem. By deeply integrating big data and fostering cross-industry collaboration, the project delivers a "high-density, high-level, and efficient" innovation experience. The expansion from "square" to "cube" not only maximized scarce land resources but also garnered praise from cultural and academic institutions for its sensitive approach to heritage and modernization.

Shanghai Cloud’s successful completion in June 2024 marks a new chapter for North Shanghai, positioning the area as a dynamic gateway to the city’s smart future. The project’s excellence has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award, celebrating its visionary blend of art, science, and technology—a beacon for future urban regeneration worldwide.
