Unveiled in January 2025, “Mystical Serpent” by Phaidesign captivates visitors to The Inlet in Shanghai, blending ancient mythologies with contemporary design. Drawing inspiration from Zhulong, the serpent deity of Chinese legend, and the Roman “domestic snake,” the installation symbolizes renewal, protection, and the enduring cycle of life. This fusion of Eastern and Western motifs not only honors the Year of the Snake but also highlights the city’s cosmopolitan spirit and its embrace of cultural diversity.
The installation features a striking 3D inflatable serpent, crafted from lightweight, recyclable materials, that weaves through the building’s windows and across its historic facade. Measuring up to 14 meters in length, the serpent’s body is adorned with bold patterns—combining Chinese auspicious symbols and Roman motifs—crafted from recycled materials. The use of printed murals and glass stickers creates a pseudo-3D effect, transforming the building’s exterior into a dynamic canvas that shifts between day and night, offering a fresh visual experience for both locals and visitors.
Technological innovation underpins the project’s realization. The inflatable structure ensures stability in varying weather conditions, while the mural’s visual illusions generate a strong sense of depth. The lighting design not only illuminates the neighborhood at night but also enhances the festive atmosphere, inviting interaction and photo opportunities in the public square. This approach revitalizes the traditional alley, turning it into a vibrant hub for community gatherings and cultural exchange.
Extensive research informed every aspect of the design, from the integration of cross-cultural symbols to the activation of public space. By situating the installation in a historic Shanghai neighborhood, Phaidesign encourages a sense of belonging and inclusivity. The project’s commitment to sustainability, cultural dialogue, and social cohesion exemplifies the transformative power of public art in urban environments.
Recognized with the Platinum A’ Design Award in 2025, “Mystical Serpent” stands as a testament to world-class creativity and innovation. The installation not only advances the boundaries of art and design but also enriches the city’s cultural landscape, making a lasting impact on both its architecture and its community.
Through this luminous serpent, Phaidesign invites audiences to reflect on the interconnectedness of cultures and the timeless themes of renewal and protection, demonstrating how art can both honor tradition and inspire new possibilities for public space.
