Set in the scenic Arrayán mountain region of Lo Barnechea, Chile, Among Quillayes stands as a testament to the power of contextual design. Architect Hector Nava’s vision centers on the preservation of the majestic arrayán tree, using it as the focal point around which the structure unfolds. The project’s terraced platforms follow the natural terrain, ensuring that the built environment remains in harmony with the landscape rather than imposing upon it.
Among Quillayes distinguishes itself through its commitment to sustainability and ecological respect. Locally sourced materials—such as natural stone, reclaimed railway sleepers, and wood—form the backbone of the design, chosen for both their durability and their ability to blend with the surrounding environment. This approach not only reduces the carbon footprint but also fosters a rustic yet refined aesthetic, creating a space that feels both timeless and contemporary.
The realization of the project involved a combination of site-specific research, digital modeling, and hands-on exploratory models. By prioritizing sustainability principles, the design team optimized construction efficiency and minimized environmental impact. The structure’s dimensions—3.45 meters wide, 2 meters deep, and a maximum height of 3.2 meters—were carefully calibrated to respect the natural topography and ensure a discreet presence within the landscape.
Functionality and user experience are at the heart of Among Quillayes. The layout maximizes natural light and ventilation, while the use of wood and stone creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Terraced platforms provide visual and physical connections to the outdoors, enhancing the sense of immersion in nature. Every element, from material selection to spatial arrangement, is thoughtfully designed to promote comfort and ecological harmony.
The project’s journey was not without challenges. Balancing integration with the environment, compliance with local regulations, and the technical demands of building on mountainous terrain required innovative solutions. The preservation of a landmark tree and the selection of sustainable materials—despite limited local availability—highlighted the creative problem-solving at the core of the design process.
Among Quillayes has garnered recognition for its achievements, earning the Iron A' Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design Award in 2025. The project exemplifies how architecture can serve as a bridge between human needs and environmental stewardship, offering a blueprint for future developments that seek to honor and preserve the natural world.
By redefining the relationship between construction and landscape, Among Quillayes inspires a renewed appreciation for sustainable design and the enduring beauty of nature.
