Tea Time: A Modern Ode to Jianshui’s Tea Culture

Blending tradition and innovation in a serene cultural space

Inspired by the poetic rhythm of time, Tea Time by Hang Chen reimagines the tea house as a meditative journey, merging historic charm with contemporary design to celebrate the art of tea in Jianshui Ancient Town.

Tea Time stands as a testament to the enduring allure of tea culture, thoughtfully renovated by Hang Chen in the heart of Jianshui Ancient Town, China. This award-winning project, completed in 2024, transforms a historic structure into a tranquil haven where tradition meets modernity. The design draws inspiration from the slow, contemplative rituals of tea drinking, inviting visitors into a space where light, air, and materials create a seamless dialogue with nature.

Central to the project’s uniqueness is its harmonious blend of old and new. The renovation preserves the architectural heritage of the original tea house while introducing copper-toned facades, transparent glass interfaces, and natural materials such as preserved elmwood. Six distinct tea experiences unfold within the space, each designed to immerse guests in a sensory journey that echoes the timeless charm of Jianshui’s landscape.

Innovative use of materials and technology underpins the project’s realization. Water-textured acrylic panels and glass tiles maximize natural light, while fiberglass and real stone paint sculpt landscape-inspired features. Metal accents and traditional craftsmanship ensure a balance between warmth and structural elegance. These elements collectively foster an environment where architecture, light, and human experience are in constant conversation.

Spatial fluidity is a defining feature of Tea Time. Open interfaces enhance airflow, reducing the need for mechanical ventilation and supporting environmental sustainability. The layout encourages both social interaction and personal retreat, with a deep balcony connecting communal and private areas. Interactive design elements and optimized lighting adapt to the changing qualities of daylight, reinforcing the concept of tea as an evolving experience.

Extensive research into tea rituals and spatial storytelling guided the project’s development. Historical studies of Jianshui tea houses informed the preservation of cultural elements, while modern strategies for lighting and ventilation ensured functional adaptability. Overcoming challenges related to natural light and spatial cohesion, the design introduces open, inviting spaces that honor the past while embracing contemporary needs.

Recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Tea Time exemplifies best practices in art, science, and design. The project not only revitalizes a historic site but also elevates the everyday act of tea drinking into a meaningful, immersive experience—making a lasting contribution to the cultural and architectural landscape of Jianshui.
