Cultural Link: Bridging Heritage and Modern Workspace Design

Maryam Alansari’s collaborative hub celebrates Bahraini culture and innovation

Located near the historic Bahrain Fort, Cultural Link is a collaborative workspace designed by Maryam Alansari, merging traditional Bahraini elements with contemporary design to inspire creativity and honor local heritage.

Cultural Link stands as a testament to the power of place-based design, drawing inspiration from its proximity to Bahrain Fort and the region’s rich history. The workspace is crafted to foster creativity among architects and interior designers, offering an environment where innovation thrives alongside cultural reverence. Maryam Alansari’s vision emphasizes the importance of local craftsmanship, ensuring that every aspect of the space reflects the unique identity of Bahrain.

The complex is thoughtfully divided into distinct zones, including private offices, co-working areas, and a material library. This spatial arrangement encourages both focused work and dynamic collaboration, allowing professionals to seamlessly transition between solitude and teamwork. Large windows connect public areas such as the co-working space and coffee shop, creating an open, accessible atmosphere that promotes interaction and community.

Traditional Bahraini design principles are evident throughout the project, from the use of indigenous materials like limestone, clay, and palm wood to the incorporation of sustainable finishes. Techniques such as material layering and the integration of sound-absorbing elements enhance both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The furniture and artworks blend local craftsmanship with modern artistic expressions, resulting in a cohesive environment that is both practical and inspiring.

Sustainability is a core value at Cultural Link, with a focus on minimizing environmental impact through the use of local resources and eco-friendly construction methods. The design research phase involved a detailed analysis of regional materials and traditional techniques, such as Naseej weaving and date palm frond applications, ensuring that the workspace not only supports environmental goals but also strengthens the community’s connection to its heritage.

Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, Cultural Link exemplifies industry best practices and technical excellence. The project’s success lies in its ability to balance innovation with tradition, creating a vibrant hub where design professionals can collaborate, learn, and draw inspiration from their surroundings. As a result, Cultural Link is poised to become a model for culturally rooted, sustainable workspaces in the region and beyond.

Cultural Link demonstrates how thoughtful design can bridge the past and present, offering a dynamic environment that nurtures creativity while preserving cultural identity. Maryam Alansari’s approach highlights the value of local heritage in shaping the future of collaborative workspaces, setting a new standard for design innovation in the Middle East.
