Myth Meets Modernity: 24 Solar Terms and Gods Series

Ancient Chinese folklore reimagined through contemporary graphic design

Zhejiang Firstdot’s award-winning illustration series breathes new life into the mythological deities of China’s 24 solar terms, blending tradition with innovation for a global audience.

Drawing from the rich tapestry of ancient Chinese classics such as the Classic of Mountains and Seas, Zhejiang Firstdot’s “24 Solar Terms And Gods” transforms folkloric figures into striking contemporary art. The series stands out for its meticulous research, extracting essential cultural elements and reinterpreting them through the lens of the 24 solar terms—a traditional calendar system that guided agricultural life and seasonal celebrations for centuries. Each illustration preserves the mystical allure of its source material while infusing it with modern vitality, making these deities accessible and relevant to today’s audiences.

The uniqueness of this series lies in its seamless fusion of tradition and modernity. Each deity, associated with a specific solar term, is depicted with intricate details and harmonious color palettes, balancing mystical charm with contemporary elegance. The artworks not only highlight the natural and cultural essence of the solar terms but also revitalize ancient Chinese heritage in a fresh visual language. This careful balance has earned the project the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its outstanding creativity and technical mastery.

Technically, the illustrations draw inspiration from petroglyphs, employing meticulous detailing and vivid hues to evoke the authenticity of Stone Age art. This approach enhances the mythological immersion, while the adaptability of the designs ensures optimal visual impact across both print and digital platforms. Each piece measures 594mm by 420mm, a format that supports both artistic expression and practical application in various media.

Interactivity is a core feature of the series. Each illustration incorporates a QR code, inviting viewers to scan and explore a dedicated website filled with detailed explanations of the solar terms, stories of the deities, and insights into agricultural wisdom. This digital bridge makes the exploration of traditional culture both accessible and engaging, appealing to a tech-savvy, global audience.

The project, initiated in China in 2021, is the result of collaborative efforts by Qiaoling Xu, Miaomiao Qiu, Haokai Tang, Xiaofan Xu, Huijiao Jin, and Weiwei Lou. Their research underscores the significance of the 24 solar terms as a cultural cornerstone, and their creative process overcomes the challenge of integrating complex mythological imagery with modern design sensibilities. The result is a series that not only celebrates but also transmits cultural heritage, inviting viewers to rediscover the timeless stories that shape Chinese identity.

By marrying ancient myth with modern design, “24 Solar Terms And Gods” offers a visually captivating and culturally enriching experience. Its innovative blend of art, technology, and tradition sets a new standard for how heritage can be preserved and reimagined for future generations.
