No Know: An Immersive Script Murder Escape Room

Rong Han’s design blends unfinished aesthetics with interactive storytelling.

No Know, designed by Rong Han, redefines the escape room experience by merging unfinished architectural elements with the intrigue of script murder games, creating a dynamic and immersive environment in Xi'an.

Located in the bustling Yongningli Shopping District of Xi'an, No Know stands out as a unique escape room that draws inspiration from both Buddhist philosophy and the evolving nature of creativity. The design reflects the Buddhist notion of looking beyond surface appearances to uncover deeper truths, aligning with the unpredictable and mysterious essence of script murder games. This philosophical underpinning sets the stage for an environment where uncertainty and discovery are central to the user experience.

The venue spans 1,080 square metres and features ten themed rooms, ranging from Republican and Chinese styles to futuristic and minimalist Ins aesthetics. Rather than relying on elaborate finishes, the design intentionally preserves the raw, post-demolition state of many walls and structures. Exposed plaster and unfinished surfaces, illuminated by carefully curated lighting, invite players to engage with the authentic textures and evolving character of the space. This approach not only enhances immersion but also allows each visit to feel like a new adventure.

Social interaction is a key element of the No Know experience. The front desk area, marked by a long, unfinished table, serves as a communal gathering point for players awaiting their turn. Narrow aisles, only 1.2 meters wide, encourage staggered movement and spontaneous encounters, fostering a sense of camaraderie and unpredictability. These design choices mirror the emergent gameplay of script murder games, where collaboration and chance meetings drive the narrative forward.

One of the most distinctive features of No Know is the retention of the original staircase connecting the basement levels. This staircase, left in its unfinished form, acts as a dynamic focal point within the public area, symbolizing the elevation and transformation that the space offers. By preserving such elements, the design maintains a sense of history and authenticity, while simultaneously providing a backdrop for new stories to unfold.

The project’s success is rooted in Rong Han’s deep understanding of script murder games, gained through personal experience as an enthusiastic player. This insider knowledge enabled the seamless integration of game mechanics into the spatial design, ensuring that the environment not only supports but enhances the gameplay. The result is a space that evolves in response to user interactions, making each engagement a fresh and immersive trial.

No Know’s innovative approach to interior design has earned it the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025. By prioritizing authenticity, interaction, and adaptability, the project sets a new standard for immersive entertainment spaces, demonstrating how unfinished aesthetics and thoughtful design can elevate the user experience and contribute to the evolving landscape of lifestyle innovation.
