Open Field Space, designed by Rong Han, challenges the conventions of traditional office environments by introducing a concept rooted in diversity and adaptability. Inspired by the belief that workspaces for spatial design teams should transcend standard formats, this project seeks to create an agile and inclusive setting. The design draws from urban streetscapes, aiming to foster innovative thinking and collaborative energy within a 400-square-metre office in Xi'an.
Central to the project is the creation of an “inner street” atmosphere within the office. This approach breaks away from rigid zoning, instead offering a staggered configuration that maximizes the interior’s capacity for multifunctional use. Two expansive rooms, each with a height of 5.5 meters, serve as the foundation for a space that seamlessly integrates office work, meetings, entertainment, and experiential activities. The result is an environment that feels both vibrant and welcoming, blurring the lines between workspace and social hub.
Materiality and lighting play pivotal roles in shaping the office’s character. The transition from light brown to deep chestnut wood finishes, paired with metal elements shifting from matte to reflective, enriches the visual depth of the space. Alternating cool and warm lighting further animates the environment, creating a cohesive yet lively palette that echoes the dynamism of city streets. This thoughtful layering of textures and tones enhances both comfort and creativity for occupants.
Visual identity is another key element, with team logos and comic-style portraits thoughtfully integrated into the design. These features not only reinforce the cultural ethos of the team but also contribute to the overall aesthetic harmony. Achieving a balance between spatial arrangement and visual storytelling was a significant challenge, ultimately resulting in a workspace that feels both personal and professionally remarkable.
The project’s research highlights how the diverse spatial configurations encourage users to see the office as more than just a place of work. By merging the energy of a neon-lit cityscape with the warmth of home, Open Field Space invites occupants to engage in creative interactions and enjoy a sense of belonging. This innovative approach has earned the project a Silver A' Design Award, recognizing its outstanding expertise and artistic vision.
Open Field Space stands as a testament to the evolving nature of office design. By prioritizing flexibility, diversity, and experiential qualities, Rong Han demonstrates how work environments can be reimagined to better support collaboration, well-being, and innovation in the modern era.
