Pulse: A Floating Pen Inspired by Cloud Elegance

Redefining Everyday Writing Tools with Sculptural Design

Pulse by Leila Ensaniat transforms the humble pen into a sculptural, tactile object, blending nature-inspired forms with advanced craftsmanship for a unique writing experience.

Pulse stands out as a functional writing instrument that challenges the conventions of everyday design. Inspired by the quiet grace of a drifting cloud, this floating pen introduces a sense of calm and balance to the workspace. Every aspect of its form and finish is carefully considered, inviting users to pause and appreciate the object beyond its utilitarian purpose. The design’s biomorphic structure and minimal aesthetic reflect a thoughtful approach to both form and function.

Leila Ensaniat’s creative process draws from generative patterns found in nature, translating them into organic, flowing shapes that enhance both the visual and tactile qualities of the pen. The use of various metal finishing techniques—ranging from polished to brushed—adds depth and subtle reflection, making each piece a sensory experience. This approach bridges digital design innovation with traditional craftsmanship, resulting in a product that is as pleasing to hold as it is to behold.

Pulse is realized through the lost wax casting method, a technique renowned for its precision and ability to capture intricate details. This method allows the pen to be produced in a variety of metals, including aluminum, silver, bronze, and even gold, offering versatility in both appearance and value. The finished product measures 160 mm in height and 13.5 mm in diameter, with options for different surface treatments to suit individual preferences.

Functionality remains at the core of Pulse, yet its sculptural qualities encourage interaction beyond writing. The pen’s unique surface patterns and floating form invite touch and exploration, transforming a simple tool into a moment of beauty and reflection on any desk. This duality of purpose—serving as both a writing instrument and a functional sculpture—demonstrates the potential for everyday objects to enrich daily life through thoughtful design.

The project, initiated in Los Angeles in early 2022 and completed in 2023, reflects a deep exploration of material, craft, and emotional resonance. Overcoming challenges such as limited studio access, Ensaniat’s hands-on experimentation with metal finishing and plating techniques contributed to the pen’s refined aesthetic and tactile appeal. The result is a product that not only advances the art of writing instruments but also celebrates the intersection of art, technology, and lifestyle.

Recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2025, Pulse exemplifies how innovative design can elevate everyday objects, blending artistry with utility to create lasting impact. This pen invites users to experience writing as a mindful, sensory act—an elegant pause in the rush of modern life.
