Alzcare: Empowering Alzheimer’s Caregivers with Smart Support

AI-driven mobile app offers guidance, safety, and community for families

Alzcare, designed by Yueling Lai and Sicong Zhou, is a pioneering mobile application that addresses the complex challenges faced by caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, blending technology and empathy to improve daily caregiving and emotional well-being.

Alzheimer’s disease impacts over 55 million people globally, with more than 100 million families navigating the emotional and practical demands of caregiving. Recognizing the isolation and stress experienced by caregivers, Alzcare was developed as a comprehensive mobile companion to provide practical tools, emotional support, and a sense of community. The app’s mission centers on alleviating daily burdens and empowering families through innovative technology.

Alzcare distinguishes itself through its integration of AI-powered guidance, real-time alerts, and a robust caregiver community. The app’s Home + Care Tab centralizes essential caregiving functions, enabling users to log medications, set reminders, track symptoms, and generate reports to inform medical decisions. Real-time GPS-based alerts enhance patient safety by notifying caregivers if a loved one exits a safe area, while emergency response features and collaboration tools streamline urgent coordination among family members.

The Ask AI feature provides on-demand, expert-verified responses to caregiving challenges, offering step-by-step guidance and personalized recommendations based on previous interactions. This function is further enhanced by voice input support, allowing caregivers to access information hands-free during busy routines. The Community tab fosters peer support through discussion groups, curated educational resources, and emotional support programs, addressing the mental health needs of caregivers.

Family coordination is simplified with shared task lists, scheduling tools, and private discussion spaces, ensuring seamless communication among all caregivers. The app’s visual design prioritizes accessibility, featuring a warm color palette, high contrast, and large typography to accommodate users of all ages. These thoughtful design choices emerged from extensive user research, including interviews, field studies, and consultations with Alzheimer’s healthcare experts.

Developed using Figma, Origami Studio, and Adobe After Effects, Alzcare was initially designed for iOS, with plans for future expansion to Android. The project launched in California in December 2024 and completed its first phase in March 2025. The app’s design process addressed significant challenges, such as balancing simplicity with comprehensive features, ensuring privacy in real-time tracking, and integrating reliable medical guidance through AI.

Alzcare’s innovative approach and user-centered design have earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in Mobile Technologies, Applications, and Software Design for 2025. By combining advanced technology with compassionate design, Alzcare stands as a transformative tool for families, enhancing both caregiver well-being and patient safety in the journey of Alzheimer’s care.
