Goodbikes: Transforming Tourism into Social Impact in Namibia

A community-driven bicycle donation campaign empowers local mobility

Inspired by the strength of community and the need for sustainable mobility, Goodbikes by Squared reimagines tourism as a catalyst for positive change in Swakopmund, Namibia.

Goodbikes stands out as a social impact campaign that merges travel with tangible community benefits. Tourists visiting Swakopmund are invited to purchase bicycles at special rates for use during their stay, with the option to donate these bikes before departure. This simple yet effective model addresses local transportation challenges, providing essential mobility for residents and supporting access to work, education, and vital services.

The initiative’s unique approach lies in its seamless integration with the local ecosystem. Partnering with businesses and the municipality, Goodbikes ensures that donated bicycles are repaired and redistributed through local shops, fostering economic growth while reducing environmental impact. The campaign’s branding features bold, minimal visuals and eco-friendly materials, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and clarity in communication.

Digital engagement plays a crucial role in the campaign’s success. Goodbikes utilizes vector-based design, motion graphics, and a comprehensive print communication system—including posters, flyers, and custom metal bike plates—to boost awareness. Branded coasters in cafés and a strong social media presence further encourage participation, making the act of giving accessible and rewarding for visitors.

Research underpinning the project highlighted a significant gap in local mobility and a strong willingness among tourists to contribute to social good. By leveraging behavioral design techniques, Goodbikes maximizes participation and ensures the longevity of its impact. The project’s collaborative framework, involving creative direction, marketing strategy, and digital growth expertise, enabled it to overcome logistical challenges and align diverse stakeholders.

Recognized with the Iron A' Social Design Award in 2025, Goodbikes exemplifies how thoughtful design and collective action can drive sustainable change. The initiative not only empowers local communities but also sets a scalable example for merging tourism with social innovation worldwide.

Goodbikes continues to inspire by proving that small, well-designed actions can create lasting, positive transformation—one bicycle at a time.
