Merci: A Tranquil Plant Cafe Bridging Communities

Yuma Sato’s countryside cafe celebrates nature, sustainability, and local connection.

Merci, designed by Yuma Sato, reimagines rural architecture as a harmonious space that unites communities, supports local cycles, and offers a serene retreat immersed in nature.

Merci stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in revitalizing rural landscapes. Conceived by Yuma Sato, the project was inspired by the desire to create a peaceful structure that connects two cities while addressing the challenges of an aging and shrinking population. The cafe’s mission is to foster community engagement and regional circulation, establishing a beloved landmark that both locals and visitors can cherish.

This plant cafe distinguishes itself through its seamless integration with the surrounding countryside. Expansive windows and a terrace blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, allowing guests to enjoy panoramic rural views throughout the day. The open atrium and a distinctive triangular indoor balcony above the entrance create a sense of unity and openness, while the careful use of natural materials enhances the sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere.

Merci’s construction reflects a commitment to sustainability and innovation. Employing advanced wooden construction techniques and structural calculations, the building features open ceilings that invite natural light. Flooring made from recycled coffee grounds solidified with cement, and natural materials for the outer walls, underscore the cafe’s dedication to environmentally conscious design. The result is a space that is both modern and deeply rooted in its natural context.

Functioning as more than just a cafe, Merci serves as a hub for local interaction and cultural exchange. The use of local ingredients and the promotion of regional products highlight the cafe’s role in supporting the local economy. Additionally, Merci aims to attract inbound tourism by offering an authentic experience of traditional Japanese hospitality within a contemporary architectural setting, making it a valuable resource for the region.

The design process was guided by research into creating spaces that evoke both nostalgia and a vision for the future. By maximizing the unique qualities of the area and designing for adaptability, Merci aspires to blend seamlessly with its environment while anticipating the evolving needs of the community. The project’s expansion, beginning in Okayama City in 2024, signals a broader ambition to inspire similar initiatives in other regions.

Recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Merci exemplifies how architecture can elevate quality of life through creative ingenuity and sustainable practices. Yuma Sato’s vision demonstrates that thoughtful design can foster community, celebrate nature, and create enduring value for both residents and visitors alike.
