Tubedex: Redefining Bus Stations for Smart Cities

Industrial pipe-inspired design brings innovation to urban transit

Tubedex, designed by Industrial Design College, transforms the traditional bus station into a symbol of post-industrial urban renewal, blending artful aesthetics with advanced technology for a smarter, more engaging public experience.

Drawing inspiration from the industrial pipes that characterize post-industrial cityscapes, Tubedex reimagines the bus station as a piece of urban art. The design team sought to preserve the cultural memory of industrial clusters while challenging outdated stereotypes associated with these environments. The bold red interactive interface pays homage to the energy and efficiency of modern cities, ensuring high visibility and a dynamic presence within the urban landscape.

What sets Tubedex apart is its deconstructed use of circular tube elements, which lend both elegance and a sense of continuity to the structure. The station’s interactive interface is a standout feature, providing transparent, real-time information about bus operations. Passengers benefit from intuitive visual displays that include time, weather, and bus occupancy rates, all tailored to enhance the commuter experience and support the goals of smart city infrastructure.

Material selection plays a crucial role in Tubedex’s appeal. Brushed stainless steel forms the main body, offering durability and a distinctive metallic sheen that changes with the light. Solar panels integrated into the roof supply sustainable energy, while luminous LEDs and frosted glass illuminate the space below, creating a welcoming environment at all hours. The modular construction, featuring universal body parts and cast connectors, achieves a balance between economic efficiency and visual sophistication.

The interactive interface is divided into a standard screen and a 16:9 widescreen, each delivering prioritized information based on user needs. Real-time data is collected and processed using smart city strategies, providing passengers with accurate predictions of bus arrival and occupancy. This thoughtful approach to information design ensures that Tubedex is not only functional but also user-centric, reflecting a deep understanding of contemporary urban mobility challenges.

Research for Tubedex was grounded in the evolving needs of smart cities, where the Internet of Things is reshaping public transportation. The design addresses common issues such as rigid information delivery and limited user interaction, proposing a solution that is both technologically advanced and visually compelling. The project, completed in early 2025, stands as a testament to the power of design in enhancing urban life.

Tubedex has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award, underscoring its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements. By merging industrial heritage with modern innovation, Tubedex sets a new standard for street and city furniture, making public transport more accessible, informative, and inspiring for all.
