Drawing inspiration from the terraced fields of Black Mountain in Lianshan and the rich symbolism of animal totems, the packaging for Qingyuan Lianshan Hei Shan Rice reflects a deep connection between people and their land. This relationship, cultivated over generations, is visually echoed in the packaging’s design, which encapsulates the harmony and prosperity inherent in sustainable farming practices. The concept, described as “a grain of rice in the mountains, a grain of rice in the mountains,” underscores the product’s roots in both nature and tradition.
Distinct from conventional rice packaging, Yu Ziji’s design positions the rice box as a “ruler to measure the poetry of landscape.” The packaging transcends its utilitarian function, serving as a tactile bridge between consumer and environment. By integrating a graduated measuring scale into the inner packaging, the rice box transforms into a practical measuring cup, encouraging repeated use and reinforcing sustainable habits. This innovation not only enhances user experience but also fosters an emotional connection to the product’s origin.
Central to the design is the revitalization of traditional Chinese cultural symbols—“Fu, Lu, Shou, Xi, Cai,” representing blessings, prosperity, longevity, happiness, and wealth—through a contemporary visual language. These motifs are skillfully woven into the packaging, marrying folklore with modern aesthetics. The outer packaging captures the essence of Qingyuan’s natural scenery, while the inner layer features artistic representations of the five elements, expressing aspirations for a fulfilling life in a simple yet evocative style.
Environmental responsibility is at the core of the project. The entire packaging system is crafted from recyclable kraft paper, adhering to strict eco-conscious standards. This choice not only minimizes environmental impact but also aligns with circular economy principles, offering both aesthetic refinement and practical sustainability. Despite utilizing cost-effective materials, the packaging maintains a premium feel, with production costs controlled at just 5 yuan RMB and a retail price of 138 yuan RMB, significantly improving profit margins.
The impact of the design extends beyond aesthetics and sustainability. Following its launch, sales of Qingyuan Lianshan Hei Shan Rice surged by 150%. The project has garnered international acclaim, receiving two gold awards from the German iF Design Award and the British Pentawards, as well as a Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2025. These accolades reflect the design’s commercial success and its resonance within the global design community.
Qingyuan Lianshan Hei Shan Rice packaging stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in elevating everyday products. By blending cultural heritage, environmental consciousness, and practical innovation, Yu Ziji’s creation invites consumers to experience the poetry of landscape with every grain of rice, setting a new standard for product packaging in the modern era.
