Jingumae Project: Nature-Inspired Urban Living in Tokyo

Modern East-meets-West design harmonizes with Togo Shrine’s serenity

Kazushige Masuya’s Jingumae Project redefines apartment living in Harajuku, blending natural materials and traditional Japanese craftsmanship to create a tranquil, sophisticated residence that connects urban life with nature.

Located adjacent to the historic Togo Shrine in Tokyo’s Harajuku district, the Jingumae Project by Kazushige Masuya offers a fresh perspective on urban residential design. Drawing inspiration from the serene environment and lush greenery of the shrine, the apartment’s interiors evoke a sense of harmony with nature. Surface treatments are intentionally minimal, allowing the natural textures of chestnut wood, granite, and hand-blown glass to take center stage. Traditional Japanese lattice patterns, reflected in the parquet flooring and door details, pay homage to heritage while embracing contemporary sensibilities.

The project’s unique L-shaped layout merges two separate units, introducing curved walls and ceilings that guide movement and enhance spatial flow. This design approach, inspired by Taisho-era aesthetics, creates a seamless transition between spaces and fosters a calming atmosphere. The use of earthy tones and natural accents throughout the residence further amplifies the connection to the outdoors, offering residents a peaceful retreat from the city’s bustle.

Craftsmanship is a defining feature of the Jingumae Project. The sliding doors are produced using the sumimaru-gōshi technique, where intricate latticework is carved from a single block of solid wood. This meticulous method results in elegant, softly rounded forms that unify the space. Other wooden elements also utilize this approach, ensuring visual cohesion and a tactile sense of quality. The emphasis on sustainable materials and artisanal techniques reflects a commitment to both environmental responsibility and timeless design.

Realization of the project required rethinking conventional interior modules to prioritize comfort and livability. Through extensive collaboration with the client, circulation widths, corner dimensions, and daily flow were carefully considered, resulting in generous spatial allowances tailored to individual needs. This attention to detail led to a uniquely personalized environment, as confirmed by the client’s satisfaction upon completion.

Undertaken during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project faced delays in sourcing materials and furnishings. However, this period allowed for deeper reflection on the true essence of home and comfort. The outcome stands as a thoughtful counterpoint to trends favoring economic efficiency, instead championing quality, sustainability, and well-being. The Jingumae Project, recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, sets a new standard for urban living that harmonizes tradition, innovation, and nature.

The Jingumae Project exemplifies how thoughtful design and craftsmanship can transform urban residences into sanctuaries of tranquility and elegance. By integrating traditional Japanese elements with modern sensibilities, Kazushige Masuya offers a compelling model for future city living—one that prioritizes harmony, sustainability, and the enduring beauty of natural materials.
