Revolutionizing Urban Mobility: The Sada Bike

Hubless, Foldable, and Portable: A New Era in Bicycle Design

Urban mobility has been redefined by the Sada Bike, a hubless and foldable bike designed by Gianluca Sada. This innovative design, inspired by the need for smart mobility and sustainability, is a game-changer in the field of transportation design.

The Sada Bike, a unique creation by Gianluca Sada, stands out due to its five strategic features. It is a hubless bike, offering an innovative design and excellent ergonomics. The bike is also foldable, with a special fulcrum in the center that allows the entire frame to fold into a compact shape, similar to an umbrella. This feature enables the bike to be folded with a single movement, making it highly portable. The compact size of the bike allows it to be carried on the shoulder or used as a trolley, further enhancing its portability.

The bike is made from aluminum alloy (7075 Ergal) parts, produced through a CNC process. Future prototypes and production models are planned to be made from Ergal and carbon fiber. When open, the Sada Bike is similar in size to a standard 26-inch bike. However, when folded, the frame is compact and the overall measurements are similar to those of an umbrella.

The Sada Bike operates through a unique mechanism. The frame is composed of four parts similar to a scissor front and rear. Each wheel is supported at three points: the front ones are inserted in the fender structure, while the rear ones are allocated inside the rim. The bending system has a central fulcrum that allows the front and rear parts of the structure to close the whole frame in a very compact way. The Sada Bike has a change in the lower wheel that transmits the motion, which allows the speed to be multiplied by three times. The chain then transmits the motion to the lower wheel that transfers torque to the rear rim.

The Sada Bike has been showcased in various exhibitions around the world, including SMAU Torino, Napoli Bike Festival, Forum del Design, TEDx Bologna, Design Museum Gent, Bloomfield Science Museum, Universum Bremen, Citta della Scienza, Science and Technology Museum, and Franklin Institute. The bike has been awarded the Golden A' Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design Award in 2020 for its innovative design and contribution to sustainable mobility.

The Sada Bike is a patented design, with patent number PCT EP2011 878. It has been recognized for its innovation and design, winning the 1st Classified for Idea TO and The best innovative thesis 2010. The project was also selected for 200 Young talent of Italy, an event held by the Minister of Youth.

The Sada Bike is a testament to the power of innovative design and technology in transforming urban mobility. Its unique features and compact design make it an ideal solution for the congested streets of metropolitan hubs, promoting smart mobility and sustainability.
