Revitalizing Local Bond: Tianjin Vanke Plaza Jiulong Road

Transforming a Beloved Supermarket into a Contemporary Shopping Mall

The project is located in the Hexi district of Tianjin, Southeast of the Five Avenue historical district and North of the People's Park. It is surrounded by residences, government offices, and the Foreign Studies University. The design inspiration comes from the deep bond between the local people and their beloved supermarket, Century Mart on Jiulong Road. The supermarket has been given a second breath to attract a younger generation while preserving its historical significance.

The white panels of the facade, reminiscent of the original supermarket, are complemented with copper panels and a glass curtain wall. This allows more natural light and visibility in and out of the project, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. The facade uses 3000K linear light with smooth dynamic changes, symbolizing a new life after the renovation and reflecting people's vitality.

The interior public area uses high color rendering index (90) lights to reveal the space in the 2-story main atrium, as well as the colorful tainted glass staircases. These elements guide visitors into the mall, immersing them in an environment reminiscent of the "Relativity" lithograph from Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher.

The lighting design part of the project started in May 2018 in Tianjin, China, and was completed on 31 May 2019. The realization of the entire project required detailed planning and understanding of the project's unique requirements. The lighting fixtures recommended to the customer included detailed information such as beam angles, wattage, and color temperature, installation details.

This project faced the challenge of not only meeting basic functions but also bringing aesthetic and artistic experiences for guests. The lighting inside this 25,569 m2 urban mixed-use complex plays a crucial role in achieving this. The project was awarded Silver in A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
