Lullaby: A Children's Library Like No Other

Chin-Feng Wu's Award-Winning Design Transforms a Community Space into a Learning Haven

Chin-Feng Wu's design, Lullaby, is a children's library that transcends the conventional. This award-winning design, located in a condo community building, uses the high-ceilinged space above the reading table to create a forest of trees, symbolizing the vast sea of knowledge. The design is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in transforming spaces into vibrant learning environments.

The inspiration for Lullaby came from the desire to create a space that would symbolize the growth and development of children through learning. The forest trees, resembling a giant piece of installation art, stand tall, mirroring the vast sea of knowledge. The pure white color tone of the space brings out a colorful visual atmosphere, making the reading atmosphere of the library more lively and vivid.

The realization of Lullaby involved the use of simple white to make the space appear pure. This elegantly brings out the joyful rainbow-like colors and further stresses the color contrast. In addition to rainbow curves and a giant pure white tree, the designer also used many arc elements as miniature inspirations. The high arc design at the entrance and the round-shaped small windows that resemble those on airplanes or space shuttles all smartly strengthen the overall childhood fun of this place.

The project, implemented in the public facility of an apartment building, is designed to allow parents to enjoy a leisurely time while keeping an eye on their children. At the other end of the hallway, an arched children’s reading room has been created, with the towering art installation Tree of the Jungle representing the unfathomable realm of knowledge. It is also a symbol of children growing up and prospering through learning.

Before the project was designed, a group of children from 0 to 6 years old and their parents were taken as research samples. The adults were concerned about the safeness and convenience in a playroom, and kids were found to be attracted to colorful materials and vivid shapes. This research informed the design of Lullaby, ensuring it catered to the needs and preferences of its target audience.

The design of Lullaby presented several challenges. The designers had to transform a seemingly insignificant corner space into a captivating library for children. The high arc design at the entrance and the round-shaped small windows that resemble those on airplanes or space shuttles all smartly strengthen the overall childhood fun of this place. Despite these challenges, the design was successfully implemented, creating a safe and playful children’s room close to the café in the community.

Lullaby was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
