Wenjiang Shouan: A Sculptural Flower Exhibition Center

MUDA Architects' Innovative Design Wins Silver A' Design Award

Inspired by traditional Sichuan folk houses and modern aesthetic techniques, Yun Lu and the MUDA Architects team have designed a unique flower exhibition center in Wenjiang Shouan. This innovative design has been awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2020.

The Wenjiang Shouan project, located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, is a testament to the innovative thinking of MUDA Architects. The design team, led by Yun Lu, was entrusted by the owner to create a diversified natural ecological exhibition space. The space integrates a flower planting exhibition center, a business conference center, a township training center, and a surrounding product sales area.

What sets this design apart is its unique architectural form. The team drew inspiration from the traditional roof forms and materials of Sichuan folk houses. They intervened with modern aesthetic techniques and abstract deformation to create a new architectural form that is simple yet full of tension. The small exhibition hall stands out like a sculpture, a testament to the team's artistic vision.

The realization of this design was achieved through natural curling and artistic processing. The building creates a multi-functional experience space with an open space and a continuous wall and roof. The roof of the building is made of blue tiles and local wood structure, and the external facade is treated with scattered openings. The roof is equipped with skylights to introduce natural light. This innovative approach combines local materials with contemporary breakthroughs in conventional methods, achieving a new expression of modernity and locality.

The project site is an irregular triangle. The design team filled the whole plot with a free spiral line to determine the building plan. They then stretched it vertically to form a unique space. This design approach draws people into the building naturally, much like water. The exhibition hall was ultimately conceived with an upturned ground floor, an enclosed exhibition and conference floor, and an exposed panorama roof platform.

The Wenjiang Shouan project is a perfect example of how innovative design can transform a space. MUDA Architects' design has not only created a functional space but also a work of art. The project was completed in September 2020 and has since been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Wenjiang Shouan project certainly fits this description.
