Transforming Buildings into Powerhouses with Photovoltaic Facade Shutters

Designed by Jaroslaw Markowicz, the Solarbreaker is a groundbreaking architectural innovation that redefines the relationship between buildings and energy. This photovoltaic facade shutter not only offers sun protection but also harnesses solar energy, turning a building's facade into a power generator.

The Solarbreaker was inspired by the challenge of large glazed facades that often cause rooms to overheat. Instead of viewing the sun as a problem, Markowicz saw an opportunity to convert this disadvantage into an advantage. The Solarbreaker allows nearly the entire building to produce electricity while simultaneously protecting it from the sun.

What sets the Solarbreaker apart is its seamless integration with the building. It enables the entire facade to produce energy without compromising aesthetics. The system is designed to offer maximum configuration options in the simplest form. Beyond building facades, the Solarbreaker can be used to construct barriers, fences, window blinds, and free-standing blinds.

The Solarbreaker design is based on extruded profiles with solar panels mounted on the main profile. This assembly method allows for easy separation of materials for recycling. The design is easy to install, with extruded profiles folding like Lego blocks, offering wide arrangement possibilities. The basic module dimensions are 1000mm x 120 mm x 1000mm.

The Solarbreaker is user-friendly. Connecting profiles and building structures require minimal tools. The structure is built directly on-site from components. Finished profiles with photovoltaic panels just need to be mounted and pressed, locking under the weight. The Solarbreaker is equipped with the elements necessary to connect it to the home power grid. Cable connections are hidden inside the profiles, making the solution durable and weather-resistant. Each 1m2 module can produce enough energy to power sixteen LED bulbs.

The Solarbreaker project was developed in Warsaw. Conceptual work began in November 2018, and after many prototypes and tests, the project was finally implemented in January 2020. The biggest challenge was to create a product that would retain its lightness despite the internal electronics and photovoltaic panel. The result is a product that makes photovoltaics an integral part of the building, allowing the entire building facade to produce energy without disturbing its aesthetics.

The Solarbreaker was awarded Silver in A' Building Materials and Construction Components Design Award in 2020, a testament to its innovative design and potential to revolutionize architecture and energy production. This prestigious award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
