On Stage: A Theatrical Journey at Cyprus Theatre Museum

An Experiential Exhibition Showcasing the Magic of Theatre

On Stage is the permanent exhibition of the Cyprus Theatre Museum. It aims to explore the different aspects of theatre in an experiential approach where boundaries of spectating and acting are intertwined. The exhibition unfolds in three parts: The History, The Contributors, and The Performance, each revealing a unique aspect of the theatrical world.

Having as a reference the magic one experiences when watching a theatrical performance, the design of On Stage aims to create a narrative space that evolves gradually, much like a theatrical plot in different acts. The transition from one section to the other is visually distinct, allowing the surprise and the unexpected to escalate, just as in a theatrical play. The design takes inspiration from being on stage, backstage, or in a dressing room, resulting in visually captivating representations and interactive displays.

A central diagonal showcase splits the space into three sections and directs visitors through wide and narrow paths, creating a flow of pauses and transitions. It opens only to the final part, preventing visual connections between the different sections and enhancing the element of surprise. The entrance to the museum itself creates a play of knowledge through the reflections of mirrors, where spectators, graphics, and displays dissolve their actual barriers in space and time.

The design of On Stage is unique in its approach to showcasing the world of theatre. It explores the history of theatre, the various contributors involved in a production, and the final performance itself. The exhibition acts as a filter of knowledge, revealing the hidden aspects of production that are usually unknown to the spectator. Finally, it culminates in the performance, where the final outcome is unveiled, leaving visitors with a sense of awe and appreciation for the theatrical art form.

The design team behind On Stage consisted of Skevi Farazi as the designer, Sofia Antoniadou as the museologist, Marika Ioannou as the graphic designer, Nicoleta Kalatha as the audiovisual expert, and Dakis Sevastides as the lighting designer. Their collaboration resulted in a cohesive and immersive exhibition that seamlessly combines design, technology, and storytelling.

The design of On Stage presented several challenges that the team had to overcome. The existing materials of the space, such as natural stone, timber, metal, and concrete structures, needed to be approached with respect while also ensuring that the exhibition items were highlighted in a dark space. The aesthetic balance between the exhibition design and the flamboyant display objects was constantly tested to create a harmonious visual experience.

On Stage was completed between 2010 and 2012 in Limassol, Cyprus. The design process involved extensive research on precedent examples, new trends in museology, and effective ways of communicating information through different media. The exhibition design was intricately linked with the museological approach and developed in parallel with the research on exhibition materials.

On Stage's innovative design and immersive experience have been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
