Kodama Bar Stool: A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Blending Ancient Techniques with Modern Technology

The Kodama Bar Stool, designed by Marshall Wollum, pays tribute to the spirit of the tree and showcases the beauty and versatility of wood as a renewable material. Combining traditional woodworking knowledge with the precision of a CNC router, this stool achieves complex and intricate joinery that was previously unobtainable.

A subtle Japandi design with a grounded and organic aesthetic, the Kodama Bar Stool stands out with its contrasting Walnut and Applewood. The creative and original wood joinery adds a unique touch to this piece, making it a true work of art. It is a testament to the marriage of ancient techniques and modern technology, resulting in a design that is both visually stunning and structurally sound, destined to endure for generations.

The realization of the Kodama Bar Stool required innovative programming of the CNC router, meticulously coding the toolpaths and ensuring precision workholdings of the components. This process represents the beginning of a new era of parametric design and manufacturing, opening doors for human creativity to flourish with these new capabilities.

Technical specifications of the Kodama Bar Stool include a width of 45cm, depth of 54cm, and height of 66cm. Its visible and honest wood joinery is designed to withstand the test of time, making it suitable for daily use for years to come.

The project, which started in 2016 in the mountains of Colorado and was completed in Southern California in March 2019, presented its fair share of challenges. With limited educational opportunities in this field of manufacturing, Marshall Wollum took on the role of a self-taught designer, constantly pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities. His dedication and passion for this creative adventure shine through in every detail of the Kodama Bar Stool.

Recognized for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative use of materials, the Kodama Bar Stool has garnered praise from industry experts. John Conrad, Executive Director of the International Society of Furniture Designers, describes it as a "beautiful display of craftsmanship" that celebrates natural materials and simplicity of design.

Adding to its accolades, the Kodama Bar Stool was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. The stool's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology further solidifies its position as a remarkable piece of furniture.
