The project was inspired by the idea that the essence of a ruin never dies, but instead can be reborn and generate a new cycle. Mar Mediterraneo 34 stands as a testament to this concept, with its unique blend of old and new elements that reflect the transformation of the urban context in which it resides.
The restoration process was meticulous and respectful of the building's history. Non-original elements were removed, while authentic artisan elements were preserved and given a new opportunity to shine. The main facade, which was in advanced deterioration, was carefully restored, with closed windows and balconies reopened, and original handcrafted elements polished and renovated.
The interior of the building was reconstructed with a contemporary perspective, while maintaining the essence of the past. Double heights and large windows were incorporated to generate a reinterpretation from the past. The restored house now features three levels and seven apartments that adapt to different flexible spaces, interacting with the historical elements in the main patio and two additional courtyards.
The project faced significant challenges, including the advanced deterioration of the building and the need to respect its historical value. However, the team's dedication to preserving the architectural heritage of the city resulted in a successful restoration that serves as an example for future projects in the area.
Mar Mediterraneo 34 is more than just a building; it is a symbol of the cultural and architectural revival of the Tacuba neighborhood. It stands as a reminder of the city's rich history, while also serving as a beacon of its future. The project was awarded Silver in A' Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design Award in 2021, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
