600th Anniversary Temple of Heaven: A Commemorative Liquor Packaging Design

A Modern Expression of Tradition

The Temple of Heaven in Beijing, China, celebrates its 600th anniversary this year. To honor this momentous occasion, designer Jiuzhou Li has created a set of four bottles of commemorative wine. Drawing inspiration from the temple's significance and the ancient Chinese concept of "round heaven and square earth," this design beautifully combines tradition with modern aesthetics.

The Temple of Heaven holds great cultural and historical importance in China, symbolizing the connection between heaven and earth. To capture the essence of this sacred place, the commemorative liquor packaging features a modern expression that pays homage to tradition. The bottles are divided into four sections, representing the four virtues of kindness, propriety, loyalty, and integrity, as depicted in the "heaven diagram" from the book of changes.

The design showcases the unique properties of the Temple of Heaven, emphasizing its 600-year history. The use of glass as the main body of the bottle, along with the alloy outer layer of the round cap, creates a harmonious blend of materials. The glass bottle body is adorned with UV printing technology, showcasing intricate details and vibrant colors. The outer packaging is a combination of paper and alloy, providing a visually striking presentation.

Measuring at a width of 66mm, depth of 66mm, and height of 260mm, the bottles exude elegance and sophistication. The round outer packing, with a diameter of 120mm and height of 300mm, adds a touch of grandeur. The square suit, measuring at a width of 200mm, depth of 200mm, and height of 360mm, provides a sturdy and luxurious housing for the bottles.

Interacting with the design is a delightful experience. The packaging is reusable, secured by upper and lower alloy buckles. The upper buckle features the imperial seal of the emperor, while the lower buckle displays the logo of the "600th Anniversary Temple of Heaven." Removing the buckles allows for easy access to the wine. This thoughtful design ensures that the packaging can be cherished long after the liquor is consumed.

The 600th Anniversary Temple of Heaven liquor packaging project commenced in April 2019 and concluded in January 2020, both in Beijing. Throughout the design process, the team faced the challenge of seamlessly integrating ancient traditional customs with modern international aesthetics. The result is a design that not only captures the essence of the Temple of Heaven but also appeals to a global audience.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges the innovative and practical nature of the design, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The 600th Anniversary Temple of Heaven liquor packaging design stands as a testament to the designer's ability to create products that blend tradition, innovation, and beauty.

As we celebrate the 600th anniversary of the Temple of Heaven, the commemorative liquor packaging design serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and the enduring legacy of this remarkable place. It encapsulates the hopes and aspirations of people from all corners of the world, symbolizing stability, richness, and everlasting peace.
