Guangming Public Service: A New Era in Government Architecture

Zhubo Design Co., Ltd. Transforms Traditional Chinese Spatial Patterns

Guangming Public Service, a groundbreaking project by Zhubo Design Co., Ltd., reimagines the conservative Taishi Chair-like spatial pattern common in Chinese government buildings. The design aims to inject vitality and a fresh image into government architecture, setting a new standard for green city development.

The inspiration for the project comes from the Taishi Chair-like layout, a design prevalent in Chinese government buildings that features three enclosed sides and one open side. However, Zhubo Design Co., Ltd. sought to break away from this traditional pattern, aiming to bring a new image and inject vitality into government architecture.

What sets this design apart is the designer's unique approach to the Taishi Chair form. Instead of completely rejecting it, the designer chose a more indirect, flexible way. The project site was filled with piles of earth dumped from surrounding construction sites, leaving little space for the project. The designer proposed to preserve the two small hills on the site, reducing excavation work and forming a group of green hills that extend to the Niu Mountain on the north side of the plot.

The project's realization involved several structural features. The structure system uses a shear wall structure transformed from the combination of a diagonal strut and truss, with a span reaching 42.5 m. The building features overhangs floor by floor above the transitional floor, with the longest one being 12.6 m, supported by inclined columns. The first floor above the ground has an undulating surface, with openings at the facade in the middle of standard floors.

The building is divided into two blocks with distinct forms at the vertical level. The upper rectangular volume is office space, while the lower block functions as a public service hall, whose rooftop is shaped like an undulating "mountain range". This flexible curved plane creates a relaxing atmosphere, embodying the low-impact green city development mode advocated by Guangming District.

The project faced several challenges, including the large span of openings at the middle part, the arrangement of steel beams conforming to the changes of undulating of the curved roof, and the realization of a continuous curved surface made from triangle panels. Despite these challenges, the design team managed to create a unique and innovative structure that sets a new standard for government buildings.

Guangming Public Service is a testament to Zhubo Design Co., Ltd.'s innovative approach to design. The project was awarded Platinum in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021, recognizing its exceptional and highly innovative design that contributes to societal wellbeing. The project not only sets a new standard for government architecture but also serves as an example of how design can contribute to a greener and more sustainable urban environment.
