El Cuartel del Mar: A Rehabilitation Project that Blends Architecture and Nature

Restoring an Old Barracks into a Unique Restaurant and Cultural Space

The Cuartel del Mar project, designed by Paula Rosales Torroba of More&Co, is a remarkable rehabilitation project that transforms the old Civil Guard barracks of Loma del Puerco in Chiclana de la Frontera, Spain, into a stunning restaurant and cultural space. With its integration of natural materials, strategic design, and respect for the environment, this project stands out as a unique example of adaptive reuse.

The inspiration for the project came from the surrounding landscape and the desire to create a laid-back yet sophisticated atmosphere. Natural materials such as wood, stone, and lime mortar were carefully selected to blend with the existing structure. The use of modern architectural details, like the cross pillars, adds a touch of contemporary design to the space.

One of the key strengths of the Cuartel del Mar project is its integration with the environment. The building, situated on a hillside overlooking Barrosa Beach, opens up the landscape and highlights the unique characteristics of the surroundings. The rehabilitation was done in the most respectful and integrated way possible, both inside and outside the building.

The Cuartel del Mar consists of two long pavilions parallel to the beach. The west pavilion houses the restaurant and kitchen, while the east pavilion includes an exhibition space and services for the entire complex. The main entrance, located on the northern facade, leads to a shared outdoor multifunctional patio, which serves as the backbone of the complex, providing circulation and creating an indoor-outdoor relationship.

The design of the Cuartel del Mar takes into account the efficient organization of visitor and staff spaces. The reception area is strategically placed at the entrance of the restaurant, while the kitchen has its own separate area for unloading. Services and changing rooms have separate access for visitors and staff. The exhibition zone is flexible and can adapt to various leisure and cultural activities, with the patio serving as an expansion of the exhibition space.

Throughout the project, a variety of challenges were overcome, including the complete rethinking of spaces to adapt them to new uses. The distribution was improved to make the most out of existing conditions, enhance views, and allow for fluid use of the facilities. The result is a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics.

The Cuartel del Mar project was completed over a two-year period, including delays with permits. The construction phase took six months, showcasing the efficiency and dedication of the design team.

The Cuartel del Mar project has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2021. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

The Cuartel del Mar project is a testament to the power of design to transform and revitalize spaces. By blending architecture, nature, and functionality, Paula Rosales Torroba and her team have created a unique and inspiring destination that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings.
