Revolutionizing Banking: Akbank's Award-Winning ATM Design

Akbank T.A.S pioneers the future of banking with its innovative ATM design, winning the Silver A' Design Award.

The inspiration behind Akbank's ATM design was to redefine the ATM experience, which was considered outdated and inefficient despite its relevance in Turkey. The bank sought to create a future-proof, mobile-like experience that would serve a broad range of user types. The design is part of Akbank's journey towards being the future of banking, focusing on digital transformation in all areas.

What sets Akbank's ATM design apart is its smart personalized dashboard, which is based on user behavior patterns and financial decision models. This feature allows the ATM to serve as a preferred and recommended cash transaction center, providing a unique, personalized experience. The design also reduces the average length of transactions by approximately ten seconds, enhancing efficiency.

The ATM design was developed as a web-based platform with multiple language options. The design tools used include Sketch, After Effects, Principle, Photoshop, Invision, and Zeplin, while the development tools include React.js, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, Java, and Node.js. The project began in March 2019 in Istanbul and continues to evolve with design updates and user feedback.

Research played a crucial role in the design process. Akbank used a wide range of research methods, data, and user behavior patterns to drive design decisions. Several user testing sessions, including A/B testing, usability testing, and accessibility testing, were conducted to validate hypotheses during the prototyping period.

Despite the challenges of designing a digital experience within an actual environment and dealing with the ambiguous conditions of physical environments, Akbank successfully overcame these obstacles. The design team visited the physical environments of ATMs to observe user routines and gain a better understanding.

The innovative design of Akbank's ATM not only provides a future-proofed experience but also supports a broad range of user types, including both Akbank customers and non-customer users. It offers a mobile-like experience with a smart personalized dashboard based on user behavior patterns and their financial decision-making models. This revolutionary design has rightfully earned Akbank the Silver A' Design Award, a testament to their commitment to innovation and excellence in the banking sector.
