United Cinemas Parcocity Urasoe: A Futuristic Cinematic Experience

Shuwa Tei and Kunihisa Akiyama's Award-Winning Cinema Complex Design in Okinawa

United Cinemas Parcocity Urasoe, a futuristic cinema complex in Okinawa, Japan, is a testament to innovative design and technology. Designed by Shuwa Tei and Kunihisa Akiyama, this cinema complex is a beacon of hope, symbolizing the continuity of the past and the future.

Located in Urasoe City, Okinawa Prefecture, the cinema complex is a tribute to the resilience of the region, which has a history marred by war. The design team sought to create a futuristic design using a line motif, signifying the continuity of history and a hopeful future. The complex stands out in the commercial design landscape with its unique futuristic theme.

The cinema complex is the flagship of the United Cinemas chain, boasting three special movie format theaters - Imax, 4dx, and ScreenX, and eight regular movie theaters. The Imax theater is one of the largest in western Japan, making the complex a unique entertainment hub. The cinema complex is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including Imax laser system, 4dx system, ScreenX system, Full Automation projection system, Digital signage system, Bems Gem2, Led line multi-colored lighting system, and Sony Theater management system.

With a total capacity of 1655 seats spread over 5,481sqm, the cinema complex is a marvel of architectural and design innovation. The complex includes one Imax theater, one 4dx theater, one ScreenX theater, and eight regular theaters, along with a backstage dressing room, projection room, and staff back room. The construction was handled by Takenaka Corporation, a major general contractor with ISO9001 certification.

The cinema complex was designed to offer a diverse cinematic experience to the visitors of Okinawa's largest commercial facilities. The design team aimed to create a facility that would not only cater to the local population but also attract travelers from afar. The project, which started in 2016 and opened in 2019, is located in a promising area with ongoing developments of yacht harbors, resort hotels, and coastline housing.

The design of the cinema complex faced several challenges, including advanced acoustic design and structural calculations to support the vast space of Japan's largest Imax theater. The design team also had to ensure the straightness of the Led indirect lighting and the beautiful finish of the curve in the lobby. Despite these challenges, the design team successfully created a space that gives an image of the future, raising expectations for the movie work to a high level.

United Cinemas Parcocity Urasoe was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021, a testament to its remarkable design and innovation. The award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that showcase a high level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
