Moonlight Huotang: A Fireplace for the Dong Ethnicity

Reviving Tradition and Culture through Architecture

The Moonlight Huotang is a unique fireplace designed by William Chen - Creative Prototyping Unit for the Dong ethnicity in Guangnan county, Guangxi province of China. This architectural masterpiece not only serves as a gathering place but also preserves and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Dong community.

The inspiration for the Moonlight Huotang comes from the local traditional timber construction houses and craft techniques developed by the Dong ethnicity. The circular typology of the fireplace reflects the form of gathering around the fire, creating a sense of community and acting as a small theatre for performing traditional Pipa music instrument, which has been a significant part of their lives for generations.

What sets the Moonlight Huotang apart is its unique convex shape ceiling, which enhances the sense of gathering and provides a better acoustic environment for the performances. The entry chamber of the fireplace serves as a multifunctional space, functioning as a changing room, food preparation room, and confession room. This thoughtful design ensures that the fireplace caters to the diverse needs of the Dong community.

The construction of the Moonlight Huotang combines traditional and contemporary techniques. The stone foundation and brick walls are complemented by straw and clay plaster on the surface, creating a harmonious blend of materials. The timber roof structure is CNC cut, allowing for precise fabrication and realizing the unique geometry of the Huotang typology.

With a main building diameter of 5 meters and a plot size of 6 meters width by 8 meters depth, the Moonlight Huotang provides ample space for up to 25 people. It serves as a cultural hub for the Dong community, allowing them to carry on their folk music culture and showcase their traditions to foreign tourists.

The Moonlight Huotang is not just a physical structure; it plays a vital role in the daily life of the Dong community. It serves as a forum for social gatherings, political discussions, and leisure activities. Deeply integrated into their lives, it is considered their second home. This architectural masterpiece is part of a larger rural culture regeneration project, aiming to revive the economy of Guangnan county by showcasing the Dong culture and creating a better connection with the outside world through tourism.

Completed in June 2021, the Moonlight Huotang stands as a symbol of cultural preservation and architectural excellence. It is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of William Chen - Creative Prototyping Unit and the collaborative efforts of the entire design team, including architect William Hailiang Chen, architectural assistant Shoujian Eng, structural engineer XinY structural consultants, and acoustic consultant Zhu Heng.

The Moonlight Huotang has been recognized for its outstanding design and cultural significance. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category in 2021. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.

Through the Moonlight Huotang, the Dong community can continue to celebrate their traditions, preserve their cultural heritage, and create a brighter future for generations to come.
