Nemoo: A Physical Memory Capture System for Babies

Preserving Precious Moments from a Baby's Perspective

Nemoo is a unique physical memory capture system designed by Yan Yan to combat infantile amnesia and help parents preserve their baby's early memories. Inspired by the movie Finding Dory, Nemoo aims to create a connection between childhood memories and a child's future self, allowing them to better understand themselves and retrieve lost moments.

Nemoo is not your typical baby monitor. It goes beyond simply monitoring and provides an immersive experience through its virtual reality (VR) converting function. By attaching Nemoo to a baby's hat, it records the child's memories from their own perspective. When parents come across a memorable moment, they can activate the recording by saying a trigger word. The NEMOO mobile app, connected via Bluetooth, allows parents to remotely manage settings and storage.

The recorded footage is then transferred to the parent's phone and automatically transformed into a memorable VR story. This allows parents to relive those precious moments from their baby's point of view, creating a truly immersive and emotional experience. Nemoo also has the capability to connect multiple devices simultaneously, making it ideal for families with more than one child.

The Nemoo system consists of a baby wearable device, the NEMOO mobile app, and VR glasses. The wearable device, discreetly attached to the baby's hat, captures the memories with a built-in spy camera. The app serves as the control center, allowing parents to manage settings, storage, and playback. The VR glasses provide a unique and immersive way to relive the memories, creating a truly unforgettable experience.

During the design process, Yan Yan and the design team faced several challenges. The first challenge was to differentiate Nemoo from regular baby monitors. By incorporating VR technology and focusing on the baby's perspective, they were able to create a more immersive experience for parents. The second challenge was the creation of the functional model, which required casting a tiny model with sophisticated electronic components. Finally, finding the right material for the model was crucial. It had to be baby-friendly, soft enough to be touched by an infant, yet sturdy enough to be securely attached to the baby's clothes.

The Nemoo project was developed over a period of four months in San Francisco. The design team conducted extensive research on childhood amnesia, also known as infantile amnesia, which is the inability of adults to retrieve memories before the age of three. By addressing this issue, Nemoo aims to help parents capture and preserve their baby's memories, creating a lasting connection between childhood and future self.

Nemoo has been recognized for its innovative design and practicality, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Baby, Kids, and Children's Products category in 2021. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. Nemoo's unique approach to preserving memories and providing an immersive experience sets it apart from traditional baby monitors, making it a valuable addition to any family.
