Revolutionizing Knee Surgery: The MicroPort Design's Robotic Innovation

MicroPort's Knee Replacement Robot: A Leap Forward in Medical Technology

In an era where technology and healthcare converge, MicroPort Design's Knee Replacement Robot emerges as a groundbreaking innovation. This article delves into the unique properties, design process, and the impact of this award-winning medical device on the future of knee surgeries.

As societies age, the incidence of osteoarthritis, particularly in the elderly, is on the rise. According to the World Health Organization, over 400 million people worldwide suffer from joint diseases, with over 100 million in China alone. The high technical threshold of knee replacement surgeries has been a significant challenge. MicroPort Design's robot aims to address this issue, enabling more doctors to perform this complex operation.

The Knee Replacement Robot's unique properties set it apart from traditional surgical methods. The robot system can automatically locate the osteotomy, avoiding potential injuries to the medullary cavity, soft tissue, and bone tissue that might occur with traditional surgery. This results in less bleeding, less trauma, and faster postoperative knee function recovery. Furthermore, the robot is combined with a unique internal axis knee prosthesis, addressing the technical problems of force line inaccuracy and joint dislocation common in conventional surgery.

The design realization of the Knee Replacement Robot involved a two-part system: a robot side and a control unit with an optical detector. The unique structure combines the optical and control unit into one cart, reducing space cost in the operating room. The accurate optical navigation system provides positioning function, and an outstanding algorithm allows for easy image cutting and operating plan.

The design process was not without its challenges. Knee joint replacement surgery is a procedure that heavily relies on the surgeon's experience and knowledge. To achieve a high degree of precision-assisted surgery, the robot system integrates computer algorithms, software, and a lightweight but high-strength mechanical arm. A user-friendly interface was designed to facilitate surgeons' learning and control.

The Knee Replacement Robot is a testament to MicroPort Design's commitment to innovation and excellence. This design was awarded Silver in A' Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design Award in 2021, a prestigious recognition given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. This accolade underscores the potential of the Knee Replacement Robot to revolutionize knee surgeries and improve patient outcomes.
