Mighty Dragon on the Hill: A Paradigm of Green Technology

Combining Tradition, Innovation, and Sustainability

This project takes the image of traditional Chinese dragon, in the place that takes up 7 hectares. The case has to not only meet the complex needs for such considerable technology industry, but also account for the impact upon the environment and culture.

The Mighty Dragon on the Hill, designed by T.E and C Architects Associates, is a remarkable feat of architecture that seamlessly combines tradition, innovation, and sustainability. Situated on a 7-hectare site in Miaoli, Taiwan, this factory is not just a production facility but a symbol of ecological consciousness and cultural preservation.

The design of the factory was inspired by the majestic Chinese dragon, a symbol of power and prosperity. The architects carefully considered the impact on the environment and local culture, ensuring that the project harmoniously blends with its surroundings. The result is a complex of six main buildings, including an administration center, research center, dormitory, and production line, all designed to meet the demands of the technology industry while respecting the natural landscape.

One of the standout features of the Mighty Dragon on the Hill is its unique architectural design. The buildings mimic the heat sink of an engine, with arches as the main theme. This not only creates a visually striking aesthetic but also serves a functional purpose. The arch-shaped roofs are designed to optimize the installation of solar panels in the future, promoting renewable energy and reducing the factory's carbon footprint. Additionally, the arches help to decrease wind pressure, paying homage to the surrounding landscape and minimizing the impact on the environment.

Another noteworthy aspect of the design is the incorporation of green spaces throughout the factory. Recognizing the importance of providing a healthy and inspiring environment for workers, the architects have integrated abundant greenery and various natural elements into the living spaces. This not only enhances the well-being of the employees but also contributes to the overall sustainability of the project.

The Mighty Dragon on the Hill is not just a factory; it is a testament to the fusion of ecology and culture. The design team has taken advantage of the existing centurial banyan tree and the temple of Earthly God in the original location, incorporating them into the factory's design. The banyan tree, a symbol of longevity and strength, serves as the core belief of this green technology factory, while the temple represents the preservation of local traditions and faith. Additionally, the factory's proximity to a highway allows for the inclusion of a recharge station, providing a rest area for drivers and alleviating the monotony often associated with mass production facilities.

The Mighty Dragon on the Hill project faced numerous challenges, particularly in balancing the demands of a large-scale technology industry with the principles of sustainability. However, the design team, led by Hsieh Wen Tong and supported by Chiu Hung Ta, Liu Kang Cheng, Huang Chiung Wei, and Luo Ching You, successfully overcame these obstacles. The result is a paradigm of green technology, a leading dragon in the technological industry that sets an example for future projects.

The Mighty Dragon on the Hill project was completed in October 2020 and has since garnered recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
