H Space: A Unique Office Interior Design

Creating a Sustainable and Functional Workspace

The H Space office interior design, created by Chien Ming Lai and Jun Ru Chen, is a remarkable example of sustainable and functional design in a metal manufacturing factory in Taiwan.

With a focus on the 3 R principle (reduce, reuse, and recycle), the H Space office aims to provide employees with a comfortable workspace while minimizing the use of earth resources. The design inspiration came from the owner's reflection on the wasteful practices of the industry and the desire to make a positive impact.

The office features modular H beam steels and metal warehouse panels as building construction units, allowing for easy assembly and disassembly. This reusable material ensures that the office can be relocated without compromising its structural integrity, further reducing waste.

One of the standout features of the H Space office is the warm bright yellow color of the H beam steels. This color represents the overhead travelling crane and metal manufacturing in the factory, symbolizing the diligent work of the employees.

The design of the office takes into consideration the different work purposes and divides the space into upper and lower floors. This division influences the positioning of doors, window openings, granite stairs, and metal handrails. Every element and unit is carefully arranged to create a harmonious and functional workspace.

Throughout the design process, the team faced challenges in finding materials that were environmentally friendly, efficient, and flexible, while still reflecting the image of a metal manufacturing factory. The use of H beam steels and metal partitions addressed these challenges, providing reusable materials that can be easily assembled and dismantled. This flexibility allows for different combinations to be made according to future needs.

The H Space office not only provides a comfortable and functional workspace for employees but also adds vibrant colors to the factory, establishing a positive social image for the enterprise. The design has received recognition for its excellence and innovation, winning the Iron A' Design Award in 2022 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category.

The H Space office serves as a testament to the possibilities of sustainable and functional design within industrial settings. By prioritizing the 3 R principle and utilizing reusable materials, Chien Ming Lai and Jun Ru Chen have created a workspace that not only meets the needs of the employees but also contributes to a better world.
