The inspiration behind Dongyi Dunhuang stems from the concept of "hidden," a culturally significant behavior of the Chinese literati group. This unique temperament, often associated with boldness and spirit, is reflected in the design of the hotel. The design aims to create a retreat from the bustling world, a place where one can clarify oneself amidst the sparse desert landscape, much like the spirit of Dongyi Dunhuang.

What sets Dongyi Dunhuang apart from other designs is its close interaction with the surrounding ecology. The hotel is designed to offer travelers a unique experience of being secluded in the rich history and natural landscape of Dunhuang. The design draws on traditional northwestern residences such as the "earth wall" and "drying house," using locally produced mud embryos for construction. This approach ensures that the building blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment, appearing as if it has grown naturally.

The realization of Dongyi Dunhuang was a meticulous process. The design team, led by chief designer Chen Xiangjing, aimed to explore the "possible Dunhuang" through their design practices. The hotel serves as a base for realizing this "possibility," providing guests with a high-quality experience and a place to temporarily forget their worries. The design respects the texture and form of the material itself, creating a realm of wabi-sabi from sand dunes to Gobi.

The project, which started in April 2018 and finished in June 2021, faced several challenges. The design team had to interpret people's demands for the current era while preserving the memories and emotions of the Dunhuang field.
