Hilton Changsha Riverside: A Fusion of Ancient and Modern Design

Interscape's Jerry Wu Transforms Local History into Modern Luxury

Integrating the ancient and the modern, the Hilton Changsha Riverside, designed by Jerry Wu of Interscape, is a testament to the power of innovative architectural design. This award-winning hotel, completed in 2021, is a fusion of historical magnificence and modern elegance, offering guests a unique experience of Changsha's rich cultural heritage.

Wu's design was inspired by the local environment of Changsha, a city known for its ancient buildings and modern developments. The lobby of the hotel is a geometric interpretation of these structures, creating a space that is both familiar and novel. The design is a reflection of Interscape's core philosophy of optimizing crowd flow management in both the front and back areas of a space.

The unique properties of the Hilton Changsha Riverside lie in its thoughtful integration of commerce, apartment living, and hotel accommodation. Wu broke original restrictions by restructuring the space, keeping in mind the best layout and fluidity for the architecture complex. This approach is a testament to the designer's innovative thinking and commitment to providing high-quality services for guests.

Wu's design also pays homage to Changsha's historical magnificence through the use of warm red hues and auspicious gable and hip roof designs. These elements, along with the Swastika pattern from Changsha's ancient buildings, have been masterfully transformed into various designs to create a poetic space. The full-time restaurant on the 39th floor offers a fusion of Chinese and Western cuisines, providing guests with both a taste and visual feast.

The design project, which covers an area of 51,045 square meters, was completed in July 2021. It was a challenge to create a space that would reflect both the modern prosperity and long-lasting ancient history of Changsha. However, Wu was able to overcome this by referring to the shape and deep meaning of bamboo books, which carry the broad knowledge of Chinese ancient sages. The result is a tranquil zone where guests can appreciate the academic ambience within the ancient-style guest rooms.

The Hilton Changsha Riverside has been recognized for its outstanding design, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and the Hilton Changsha Riverside is no exception. With its blend of ancient and modern design elements, it truly is a remarkable example of architectural excellence.
