Reviving Tradition: The Disappeared Manufacturing Project

Wey Duan Luo's Innovative Interpretation of Taiwanese Architecture

The design draws inspiration from the rolling hills and cornices of traditional Taiwanese houses, evoking a sense of nostalgia. The courtyard layout, reconstructed using modern methods, creates a dialogue between the old and the new, enhancing the space's atmosphere. The innovative use of steel structure, glass, and other elements offers a sharp contrast to the Great Buddha Temple next door, further emphasizing the project's unique character.

The Disappeared Manufacturing project's unique properties lie in its clever spatial organization. The main circulation is divided into two, leading to showroom units on different floors. Traditional Chinese windows separate the spaces, surrounding a skylight courtyard. The design integrates pre-sale house advertisements into cultural activities, coffee shops, and pastry shops, creating a vibrant and engaging environment. The curtain glass ceiling and wall blur the boundary between the street and the building, evoking a village scene and offering a recreational space that interrupts the city's rapid pace.

The project's realization involved the use of CNC metal lathes for corridor handrails, display windows, glass curtains, and other decorative components. The roof is made of metal-shaped aluminum clad panels, with a sliding type fixation that allows for quick construction and mitigates the effects of thermal expansion. Part of the wall is covered with eco-friendly stone paint, further emphasizing the project's commitment to sustainability.

The design's technical specifications include a steel structure as the main construction method, applied to the roof shape design. The site area measures 1779.5m², and the building area is 1470.96m². The project started in July 2020 and took eight months of design and development before construction began in February 2021. The center officially opened in April 2021.

The Disappeared Manufacturing project faced several challenges, including managing the gaps created by overlapping eaves roofs in different directions and ensuring smooth correspondence between the glass curtain wall and the roof edge. The positioning of the mezzanine platform also posed challenges as it affected the structural plane and the stairs' seating position. Despite these challenges, the project was successfully completed and has since become a significant landmark in the Banqiao District.

The project's success has not gone unnoticed. In 2022, the Disappeared Manufacturing project was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building, and Structure Design Award, a prestigious recognition for creative and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. This award is a testament to Wey Duan Luo's innovative vision and the project's unique contribution to Taiwanese architecture.
