Strings: A Unique Leisure Chair Inspired by Melodies

A Synesthetic Design for Visual and Tactile Enjoyment

The design of Strings is centered around the concept of strings and their connection to music. Wei Jingye and Zhang Xuechen selected metal wire as the raw material for this chair, carefully shaping it to create a form that is not only visually appealing but also ergonomically designed for the human body. The result is a chair that is both comfortable to sit on and visually captivating.

What sets Strings apart from other chairs is its distinctive shape and visual appeal. The string-shaped steel tubes and the ring-shaped outer contour come together to create a sense of visual and auditory synesthesia. The chair not only provides a comfortable seating experience but also evokes a sense of melody and rhythm. The use of white steel as the main material adds to the chair's sleek and modern aesthetic.

The realization of the Strings design is made possible through the use of bending technology. The metal wire is bent and combined to create a smooth and flowing shape. The material of choice, 304 white steel, offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it suitable for outdoor use. The production process involves various steps such as blanking, bending, firing, stretching, springback, welding, and polishing, resulting in a chair that is not only visually appealing but also durable and long-lasting.

Strings measures 740mm x 820mm x 915mm, providing ample space for relaxation and leisure. The chair's design allows for various sitting positions, making it suitable for reading, drinking tea, or simply taking a moment to unwind. Its lightweight and low-key shiny color make it an ideal choice for outdoor leisure activities.

The design process for Strings began in March 2021 in Shenyang and was completed in June 2021. The chair was displayed at the museum of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. The design was guided by the concept of strings, aiming to create a visual and tactile experience that brings joy and relaxation to users.

Overcoming the challenges of creating a chair that combines metal wires in a regular and flexible manner while ensuring comfort and functionality was no easy task. However, Wei Jingye and Zhang Xuechen's creativity and technical expertise allowed them to successfully bring the Strings design to life.

Strings has received recognition for its innovative design and creative ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate outstanding technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
