Wanping Theater: A Masterpiece of Lighting Design

The theater's design concept is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, with the folding fan serving as a key inspiration. This cultural symbol is beautifully expressed in the theater's facade, where the lighting design strategy brings to life the shape and texture of the structure. The same principle extends to the interior, creating a harmonious blend of form and function.

What sets the Wanping Theater apart is its unique lighting design. The designers meticulously studied the law of visual brightness adaptation and applied it to the pedestrian flow line. The interior space is illuminated with a focus on wall and ceiling lighting, enhancing the perception of visual brightness. The use of high color rendering lamps ensures the vibrant display of colorful costumes in Chinese opera.

The realization of this design involved the use of adjustable angle in-ground lights and floodlights to illuminate the building facade. Inside the theater, adjustable angle downlights were used to light up the fan-shaped wave wall. The smaller theater employs linear wall washers to enhance the vertical walls of the space. High color rendering luminaries were used for functional lighting, while LED strips provide a comfortable environment for the atrium of the revolving staircase.

The project, covering a total of 29,000 square meters, was a collaborative effort of a diverse team, including lighting designers Yang Xiu, Ma Yue, Bian Chen, Ma Xiaojie, and Ge Wenjing, architects Xu Feng and Yin Peng, and VR Engineer Du Ming. The project started in April 2018 and was completed in May 2021.

The design process involved extensive research and testing. The team used DIALux to calculate the overall building illumination and adjusted the luminaire type to meet the requirements of the lighting scheme. They also made precise adjustments to all the luminaires on site to create a uniform light environment and provide a more comfortable visual experience for the audience.
